Re: Our Sanitation Highlights by year - in 2013 and 2014 - and 2016?

Hi Dan and all,

I liked your idea to ask people for their professional sanitation highlights in 2016. Looks like not so many people responded though.

So I thought about my own professional sanitation highlights for the year 2016 and they were:
  1. The fact that we got approval for Phase 3 of our grant by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support SuSanA and knowledge management! This time, we have a bigger scope of works and are working in a consortium with SEI (lead), GIZ, Oxfam, WaterAid, Kellogg Consultants (Diane). See here for more info: forum.susana.org/component/kunena/10-ann...l-knowledge-platform . We wouldn't have succeeded in getting this grant without the dedication and patience of Arno Rosemarin! The official title of this phase is: "Supporting SuSanA and the broader Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Community of Practice through an online platform”.
  2. The fact that more and more events and conferences are now using live streaming to make remote participation possible to people all over the world (for example the Virtual Menstrual Hygiene Management Conference in New York and worldwide in October was very well done; see: forum.susana.org/component/kunena/24-men...ef-october-25th-2016).
  3. The monthly SEI-SuSanA webinars are also a very nice routine addition to our calendars, I think. See videos of all 9 webinars so far in this playlist: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0gMdVBup...GxqxrrWWfhB8blXBbjGP)
  4. I was also really happy to see Dave Robbins create a Wikipedia article on fecal sludge management (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fecal_sludge_management) and Dean Satchell a Wikipedia article on vermifilters (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermifilter). Well done to those two for being bold and taking the plunge and educating the general public about sanitation topics!

Re: Our Sanitation Highlights by year - in 2013 and 2014 - and 2016?

We have received 2 responses so far via Sanitation Updates and they are:

Dec 22 – I am learning, being acquainted and enriched with a lot of relevant technical, financial and updates on global sanitation, thanks to Sanitation Updates. This is my achievement!!! On lessons learned, I think academic essays on sanitation is overlooked. more relevant published pieces could be posted on this website – Mohammad Almjadleh, WASH Specialist, Jordan

Dec 22 – We, at Banka BioLoo, have made good inroads in schools sanitation by installing bioloos, helping WaSH in schools. Sanjay Banka, (Steering Committee Member of Sanitation and Water for All), Hyderabad, India.

We hope to hear from others.

Re: Our Sanitation Highlights in 2014 - and what are yours?

Does nobody else have any sanitation highlights that they wish to share? I thought it was a good idea of Shobana and I am sure there are lots of highlights in your work on sanitation in the past 12 months? Would you like to look back and bring them to our attention?
Or perhaps there were also some "lowlights" and disappointments worth mentioning?

Regards,
Elisabeth

Re: Our Sanitation Highlights by year - in 2016 and the years before that

Dear all,

2014 has indeed been a productive year for SuSanA and the SuSanA secretariat!

Let's look back in time for this year's highlights:

Second Phase of BMGF Grant for co-funding the SuSanA forum, new front door and project database (the latter is brand new, hasn't even been advertised yet)

For more information on each of these, see:
www.forum.susana.org/forum/categories/13...mit=12&start=12#9342
www.forum.susana.org/forum/categories/10...nd-new-layout-inside
www.susana.org/en/resources/projects (new project database)

First ever SuSanA Forum survey was conducted in October 2014. 435 users or prospective users participated in it giving us great feedback and views on the Forum. The results of the survey are available here .
Several changes have been implemented on the forum based on the survey, for example:
New category structure, new icons: www.forum.susana.org/forum/categories/10...categories-new-icons
Lists of key documents (in progress): www.forum.susana.org/forum/categories/10...d-sub-category-level
New front door (see above)

SuSanA reached 4000 members in September 2014

New SuSanA website was launched during the Stockholm World Water Week 2014
Watch Trevor's presentation in Stockholm here at 1h13mins:

Re: Sanitation Highlights of 2013 - Eram Scientific Solutions

In a concerted effort taken towards creating huge impact on the lives of the common man, the introduction of eToilet – India’s First Electronic Public Toilet has made significant contributions in revamping the Indian sanitation sector (edit by moderator: see also here on the forum for more details on this: forum.susana.org/forum/categories/105-pr...ram-scientific-india). Developed and designed with an aim to enable access to improved and sustainable sanitation solutions, the innovative solution, eToilet incorporates the integration of new sanitation technologies. The major endeavours and accomplishments through the Year 2013 are as below.

New ‘eToilet Stainless Steel Model’ Introduced
The innovative solution has been designed in line with various parameters viz; affordable, accessible and sustainable sanitation amenities to provide better and improvised user experience. Owing to the ever-increasing need for more toilets, a new-fangled version of eToilet, the “Stainless Steel (SS) eToilet Model” has been introduced for enhanced sustainability and durability of the product. The eToilet SS Model has sleek form, compact looks and user friendly features thus making it an appealing sanitation infrastructure. The stainless steel built-up units besides adding to the aesthetic appearance of the eToilets also are highly durable and withstand wear and tear in the long run. Furthermore, the unmanned SS eToilets requires less maintenance to keep it fit in form.

Major Installations
The new Stainless Steel eToilet Model has been installed at two prominent locations in New Delhi, the Capital City of India. Apart from this, another two units have been installed in Pollachi, a small town located in the State of Tamil Nadu. The units have drawn the attention and appreciation of the public, especially amongst the women community in Pollachi. This SS model has been installed at various locations across India.

Commemorating World Toilet Day
The World Toilet Day 2013 was commemorated with a series of activities such as launching the new Stainless Steel (SS) eToilet Model and new product- Atmospheric Water Generator. As part of this event, an animation video was also launched focussing the importance of sanitation. Please view the video on www.youtube.com/v/EtgJ_v2hZBc . Various posters highlighting the significance of good hygiene and sanitation practices were also published. These posters can be viewed at www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.575639...6017290486243&type=3 . The event highlighted the huge crisis to improved sanitation and hygiene prevalent in the sanitation sector.

Awards
In the year 2013, Eram Scientific has won several recognitions for its innovative and developmental initiative taken to uplift the public sanitation landscape. Some of them are given below:

1. Express IT Awards 2013
2. Parivartan Sustainability Leadership Awards 2013, “Sustainable Brand of the Year”
3. NASSCOM Emerge 50 Winner 2013, EMERGE Growth Category

What were your sanitation highlights of 2013?!

We had a quick think today, and these are the three highlights of 2013 that stuck out for the SuSanA secretariat!

- The discussion forum saw an upgrade and SuSanA reached 3000 members -

- Peter Morgan was awarded the Stockholm Water Prize for his contribution to water and sanitation -

- The UN officially named November 19th World Toilet Day -

Let us know what else you would add as sanitation highlights for 2013.

Happy New Year!
