Zambia SDG Voluntary National Review 2020; A focus on SDG 6.2

Dear All,

The Wikipedia edit-a-thon mentioned by Elisabeth here , has seen volunteers from around the world come together to work on the improvement of all the SDGs including SDG 6. from 19th-26th September 2020. I am one of the volunteers who has taken part, and I found the experience worthwhile. Interestingly, research around SDG 6  pointed me to a very interesting voluntary national review from Zambia, published this year in June.

Here is the extract on SDG 6. Target 2 which looks at Zambia's progress on Sanitation :

Indicator 6.2.1: Proportion of population using safely managed sanitationservices, including a hand-washing facility with soap and water

The 2018 Zambia Demographic Health Survey results showed that 33 percent of the population had basic sanitation service, 41 percentin urban areas and 28 percent in rural areas. Fifty-four percent of households had access to an improved
sanitation facility, with the most commonly used facility being a pit latrine with a slab (37 percent). By
province, the proportion of the population with improved sanitation facilities varies from a high of 80
percent in Lusaka Province to a low of 6 percent in Western Province. The proportion of the population
engaging in open defection is highest in Western (50 percent) and lowest in Copperbelt, Lusaka, and
Northern Provinces (1 percent each).
Eighteen percent of the population in the lowest wealth quintile had basic sanitation service, as
compared with 65 percent of the population in the highest wealth quintile. Data showed that urban
households were more likely than rural households to have either improved or shared toilet facilities,
while rural households were more likely to have unimproved facilities or no facilities. Overall, 16
percent of rural households had no toilet facility, as compared with 1 percent of urban households.

Have other countries worked on similar documents? Would be nice to see progress on this SDG within other countries especially within Africa and maybe even consider creating Wikipedia articles in relation to the same.

Re: Zambia SDG Voluntary National Review 2020; A focus on SDG 6.2

Thanks for pointing this out, Chaiwe, and it was nice to have you in the Wikipedia edit-a-thon in September (more information about that event here )!
The SDG 6 article now looks like this in Wikipedia:  SDG 6 article in Wikipedia

Since you mentioned the Zambia SDG Voluntary National Review, I'm wondering if you'd like to set up a new Wikipedia article on "Sustainable Development Goals and Zambia"?
We set them up for 4 countries during the edit-a-thon: This might also be a nice rallying point for anyone else from Zambia who is interested in learning how to edit Wikipedia.
