The animation is great I like it. The logistics of emptying the toilet once a week could be an issue when it come to services for the poor. Should there be better ways of collection and disposal, will make the terra preta toilet more effective. Just a quick thought, will send you some comments soon.

Dear Kannan, calculations have shown that this colletion is vry feasible but needs to be 100% reliable. Cost will be around 3 to 4 cents per person per day. In suitable situation there can be other means of transport. Such toilets can flush after they are well filled even with gravity pipes to an underground tank.

Yes, I agree. More than the affordability, it is the reliability and the intention of the authorities and the service provider to provide uninterrupted service to the poor. It is well know fact that the poor pays more than the afforadales to get services and to meet the basic needs.

How you could "flush" the content down by gravity slop, with or without water, or do you mean just a vertical slope (drop)?

The toilet in the animation is the winner of the WTO-TUHH Design Award that was handed over in Durban last year. Such concepts can serve large populations in more densely populated and urban areas in different ways. Cost for such a toilet are estimated to be around 100 €, service around 3 cents per person and day. This animation was possible through a private donation and is part of the pathway towards production of this system.

Service is not restricted to this toilet model but can include other container toilets and even pit latrines that can then be sealed to the ground and closed after useage. Lactic acid fermentation is required to enable smell free collection. UD is an option but not necessary, excreta shall be composted including urine. This requires around 200 kg of dry and small enough woody materials and produces huge amounts of very valuable soil conditioners. Charcoal can be added to make the compost long lasting, preferably from woodgas stoves.

As most people hate utilisation of excreta compost for their food and for the sake of saftey we recommend useage for non-food e.g. reforestation (preferably Moringa Olifeira), industrial crops or fodder.
