Taking Swachh Bharat Mission to the next level: Insights from an immersive research on inclusion, toilet usage and hygiene behaviours

Who is being left behind in Swachh Bharat Mission? How do we include them? Immersive research report Taking Swachh Bharat Mission to the next level , by WaterAid India in collaboration with Institute of Development Studies, gives insight into who is missed in sanitation programming in areas of India and how to include them.

It covers nine villages across the states of Andhra Pradesh (AP), Uttar Pradesh (UP), Chhattisgarh and Odisha. Each research team stayed in a village for 2-3 nights and gained insights on inclusion, toilet usage and hygiene behaviours and other critical areas of sanitation.

Based on these findings, this study has suggested ways forward for Swachh Bharat Mission for including people and households left out of sanitation programming, addressing factors affecting toilet usage, improving hygiene and other behaviours related to sanitation, and improving sanitation in institutions.
