Dear Forum Members,

We are pleased to announce our Thematic Discussion on the new WHO guidelines on sanitation and health . We invite you to join this discussion that will run over the next three weeks until 10 December.

The new WHO guidelines on sanitation and health were launched last month with the aim to promote safe sanitation systems and practices. The guidelines include a summary of the current evidence on the links between sanitation and health, provide evidence-informed recommendations, and offer practical guidance for international, national and local sanitation policy and programming. The guidelines also articulate and support the role of health authorities to help ensure that health risks are identified and managed effectively.

Our discussion will be structured along four themes that will run in parallel – (1) evidence on sanitation and health; (2) universal access to and use of safe toilets; (3) safe sanitation chain; and (4) health sector role in sanitation – to provide deeper insight into key recommendations, guidance and technical resources and to address questions from Forum Users.

The discussions will be supported by WHO staff involved in the development of the guidelines (Kate Medlicott and Sophie Boisson) with inputs from lead authors and guideline development group members.
