thank you for sharing your thoughts. Certainly your concerns about capability of local operations and availability if spare parts and overall O&M were key topics which came out from our first wave of questionnaire sent to stakeholders. The first EAG meeting will be held in two weeks time where we will be discussing and developing principles and criteria for the standard.Your reminder on Eric Dudley's question will certainly be helpful at all times in the EAG meeting.

I would suggest that to be called an Omniprocessor, a technology should be able to take the faecal sludge or septage delivered to the treatment plant and provide all the treatment steps required to produce the required end products with an operating cost that is affordable to the intended users. I suspect that few of the technologies developed to date meet this requirement. For instance, the Omniprocessor installed in Dakar requires in influent with a solids content of the order of 15 - 20% if it is to produce the energy required for its own operation. The solids content of septage in Dakar is less than 1% and so has to be dried before it can be used as feed material for the omniprocessor - which means that the machine is no longer an omniprocessor. If raw septage with a low solids content is fed straight into the omniprocessor, the cost of the additional energy required for the process will be very high.
Another related point is the need to take account of management costs, including the cost of replacement parts that will certainly be required from time to time, and the need for specialised skills. Community-level technologies need to be as simple as possible unless they can make use of knowledge and skills that are already available in the community.
When considering how well a technology achieves health and environmental safety standards, it is always useful to bear in mind Eric Dudley's question 'how might the proposed solution fail?'

TÜV SÜD seeking Expert Stakeholders to participate in Expert Advisory Group (EAG) on Community-Scale Resource Oriented Sanitation Treatment Systems -Omni Processor- for the development of an International Technical Standard
TÜV SÜD has started working to develop a technical standard for decentralized, resource-oriented sanitation system. These decentralized systems are intended to offer a community scale solution to address the situation of poor fecal sludge management practice and sustainable treatment solutions that would generate valuable resources such as drinking water or water for irrigation, fertiliser and biomass for energy production. The term Omni-Processor (OP) has been used to describe such systems.
The technical standard should ensure that a certified system will meet a clear set of health and environmental safety and regulatory parameters and support the comparison of performance enabling informed decisions. The standard will also provide a common, transparent basis that promotes both technology development and commercial adoption. This work is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
About the Standard Development Process:
We intend to follow a successful approach applied in advancing an ISO standard for “next generation” toilet technologies – household sized treatment systems. In this process, we developed a private technical standard with a selected group of experts. This standard was taken as the basis for an ISO International Workshop Agreement (IWA 24:2016 published in September 2016) which is being further developed into a full ISO standard (ISO/PC 305).
To support the development process, TÜV SÜD is calling on global experts to be part of our Expert Advisory Group (EAG) - who will accompany the writing process through active review and content contribution. The first EAG meeting will meet for the first time in Singapore on the 20th - 22nd March 2017.
