SuSanA partner categorisation

On behalf of the SuSanA secretariat, we have recently begun to conduct a SuSanA partner mapping exercise. Therefore, we have allocated each SuSanA partner into one of eight categories.

The following are the eight categories for SuSanA partner organisations which we have defined:
1. Local NGO
2. International NGO
3. Private sector
4. Education / Research
5. Government / State-owned organisation
6. Multilateral organisation
7. Network / Association
8. Others

1. Local NGO
A local non-governmental organisation which is predominantly active in one or two countries only.

2. International NGO
An international non-governmental organisation which is active in three or more countries. For example: Oxfam, PLAN, TDH, WASTE

3. Private sector
An organisation that is operated as a business in a commercial fashion for a profit.

4. Education / Research
An institution dedicated to education or research.

5. Government / State-owned organisation
An organisation that is either a part of the government (local, regional, national) or is owned by the state / government. For example: BGR, SIDA, GIZ, JICA, DTF, KFW

6. Multilateral organisation
An affiliated United Nations entity or an international organisation which has been established by formal political agreement. For example: UNICEF, WSP, UN-HABITAT

7. Network / Association
An organisation that serves to facilitate collaboration and contact between people or organisations who have a common goal or social cause. For example: NETWAS Uganda, Cap-Net, GWA, IWA

8. Others
Organisations that do not fit into one of the categories above. If this is the case for your organisation, please inform us what type of organisation it is, so that we record it correctly in our database.

Do you agree with these categories or what would you suggest?
