Re: Mapping environmental sanitation data for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Hi all,
Just to answer your question Elisabeth, we are not mapping environmental sanitation data exactly, but instead mapping characteristics in urban areas (e.g. population density, income, accessibility) in GIS software, in order to develop a methodology for identifying "which" type of environmental sanitation solutions need to "where". This will essentially form the basis of an city sanitation planning guide for use in Dar es Salaam.
And when we talk about environmental sanitation, we incorporate all aspects surrounding a "sanitary" environment: (1) sanitation, excreta & used-water management (including greywater & faecal sludge); (2) Solid waste management; (3) Water supply; and (4) Stormwater drainage & discharge of treated used-water.
Note the use of the term "used-water" instead of "wastewater", as we don't believe that any water should be considered as "waste". I believe this was a topic discussed at the World Water Forum7 in Korea this year.
Hope this answers your question
Cheers,
Laura

Re: Mapping environmental sanitation data for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Many thanks for connecting me with John Sauer... Through a number of emails connecting many people across the world, I was able to locate the orignal web designer for sanimap. Who has his office coincidentally located just 700m from my office in Dar es Salaam!
The SuSanA network was extremely helpful for this discovery!
Cheers,
Laura

Re: Mapping environmental sanitation data for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Dear Laura,
I have sent John Sauer an e-mail to alert them to this thread (however, he is no longer with Water for People, he is now with psi, but probably he could still connect you to the right people).
I am wondering if you could explain what exactly you mean with
"mapping environmental sanitation data" ?
So it's not really about a database of sanitation projects but about "environmental data"? (for this reason, I have moved it out of the thread where you had originally posted).
It reminds me a bit of the website Maji Data that was set up by GIZ and partners in Kenya:
www.majidata.go.ke/
(you'll know but others may not: Maji is Swahili for Water)
Is that a bit what you are looking for?
Kind regards,
Elisabeth

John Sauer (user "jsauer" on this forum) should be able to link you to the right people within "Water for People".

Mapping environmental sanitation data for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
This post was originally in this thread about databases of sanitation projects:

Hi SuSanA members,
I am writing from BORDA Tanzania, where we are currently working on mapping environmental sanitation data for Dar es Salaam (and eventually smaller towns throughout the region). I have come across this useful resource created by "Water for People" and "WaterAid Tanzania" a few years ago:
sanmap.org/
As we are trying to create a similar [updated] interactive online mapping tool for public use, it would be great to find out WHO actually created this website (perhaps one of the creators is reading the SuSanA forum?) so that we do not reinvent the wheel. I already tried emailing the contact email addresses mentioned within the site, but all my emails bounced.
If anyone knows more about the creators of this site, please let me know. Many thanks,
Laura
