Re: Service Level Agreements (SSLA) for Blantyre, Malawi - WASTE

Dear Kim,

You said "Thanks to the succes of this approach, the SSLA (Sanitation Service Level Agreements) approach is now rolled out in other cities in Malawi."

Could you please tell us a bit more about how you have measured this success? Which indicators were used? How do you know that it has been successful?

In which other cities is this approach being rolled out and who is the "driver" behind that? Is it the local governments themselves or are they being supported by other players, such as WASTE?

Also how does your work on pit emptying equipment fit into this equation?

Joseph showed a video about pit emptying equipment developed by WASTE (Mobile Desludging Unit) in Malawi here*:

Here is by the way also Joseph's presentation from Hanoi:

It starts at 1 m 55 s (or click here:
)

If people want to know more about the work that the Bill Gates Foundation is funding together with DFID with city partners in Africa and Asia, see here:

Regards,
Elisabeth

* By the way, there is a typo in the title of your Youtube video:
"Mobile Desludging Unit develoed by WASTE "

Sanitation Service Level Agreements (SSLA) for Blantyre, Malawi - WASTE

The City of Blantyre, WASTE and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation initiated a new framework for sanitation management in Malawi; SSLA's *. Within this framework, the City Council can privatise public toilets, boost pit emptying businesses and treatment sites. Thanks to the succes of this approach, the SSLA approach is now rolled out in other cities in Malawi.

Joseph DeGrabriele presented the first findings during the FSM3 conferance in Hanoi this year:
