Thus the principal objective of the 2013 Budapest Water Summit: The Role of Water and Sanitation in the Global Sustainable Development Agenda is to take stock of the various developments, in and outside the UN system, in preparing water-related goals for the post Rio+20 development agenda.

Based on the outcomes of various UN programmes and initiatives as well as the World Water Forum series of the World Water Council, respectively, it also aims to present practical, accessible and affordable solutions to the main challenges identified. The Summit is expected to provide defining contributions to the elaboration of one overarching SMART (Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely) SDG on water and sanitation that corresponds and responds to multidimensional challenges.

The Budapest Water Summit is envisaged as a policy forum to facilitate consensus building amongst stakeholders concerning water and sanitation policy goals. As the Summit aims to formulate a concrete recommendation for the UN General Assembly for setting the post-2015 development agenda, it must bridge political, scientific and technical aspects in the elaboration of the water and sanitation related SDG. It is therefore imperative that the Summit be structured in such a way as to provide an open policy forum for all stakeholders involved in shaping the global post-2015 agenda.

Apply now to participate in the Budapest Water Summit Civil Forum!

The Rio+20 Conference of the UN decided that efforts made in the framework of the Millennium Development Goals should continue from 2015 onwards, and that Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) should guide these efforts. The SDGs will be set by the UN General Assembly in the autumn of 2014. The outcome document of Rio+20 titled “The Future We Want”, drew attention to the cross-cutting importance of water in sustainable development. In an effort to promote the international discussion on SDGs related to water and sanitation issues, Hungary will be hosting the Budapest Water Summit (BWS) between October 9 and 11, 2013.

To ensure broad and relevant stakeholder participation, the BWS will hold five parallel forums business, civil society, science, youth and a philanthropy roundtable. These groups will discuss five key issues related to water, namely:

• Striving for universal access to water and sanitation
• Integrated water resources management for the 21st century
• Good water governance
• Green economy for blue water
• Financing the implementation of water and sanitation SDGs

The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe are working jointly to organize the Civil Forum which will have civil ownership. The contributions from the Civil Forum will be used to develop ‘Budapest Recommendations’ in preparation of water-related goals to be established for post-Rio+20 development agenda.

All water-related civil organisations are welcome to join the Civil Forum. It will be possible to participate either by taking part in electronic discussion of the documents and recommendations and/or by sending representatives to the event. However, there are a limited number of seats; hence interested applicants are encouraged to express their interest early to be considered. Organisations from the Least Developed Countries and those countries with economies in transition that need financial assistance to attend are welcome to apply. Their attendance will be sponsored within the available means through an award scheme.
