Webinar on “Inequity and climate change: Water woes of our large dense unplanned urban settlements” A Case study of Sangam Vihar, Delhi

The rapid pace of urbanisation in the Global South has been accompanied by severe inequity in urban habitats, mushrooming of dense unplanned settlements, and poor access to basic services such as water and sanitation. Climate change is exacerbating these challenges; urgent and decisive action is the need of the hour.

Taking Sangam Vihar in Delhi as a case in point, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has undertaken a research study titled Water and Wastewater Visioning for Large, Dense Unplanned Urban Settlements in an Era of Climate Risk. Sangam Vihar is the largest unauthorised colony in Asia with more than a million people crammed into a 5 sq km area. This first-ever study of its kind explores the current status of water-related issues and challenges in the colony. It has analysed whether merely retrofitting solutions can work for a million-plus unplanned settlement; or whether we should reimagine a city-wide perspective of decentralised water supply, sewerage systems and storm water management.
