Our nation's rapid development has come at a cost. Increased urbanization and industrialization have placed immense strain on our water resources. India's rivers are becoming increasingly polluted, threatening water quality and public health. In recognition of this need, the government has introduced major amendments to the Water Act 1974. It proposed sweeping changes in the penal provisions of the Act and sought to have greater control over the selection of top officials in state boards compared to the present. It will initially apply to Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and the union territories. Other states may pass resolutions to extend its applicability to their states. The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is organizing a webinar to discuss about the “Journey of India's Water Act and way forward” on June 12th, 2024, at 2:30 PM IST.
The webinar will have the discussion on:
• Evolution and need for the Water Pollution Act in India. • Key provisions of the Water Pollution Act Amendment 2024.• Why the 2024 Amendment, what was not working in terms of the institutional set up of CPCB and SPCBs? • What are the Water Pollution challenges today - what is required in terms of strengthening Pollution control and monitoring. Our esteemed panel of speakers will include experts from various fields. This webinar is an opportunity to gain insights into the future of water pollution control in India.
