RWSN would like to invite you to participate in the Week 2 of the e-discussion on Resource Mobilization and Accountability for Resource use for rural WASH.This week (December 6-12) will focus on Funding Models/Approaches and Level of Rural WASH sector investments and will address the following questions:
 

1. Nature of and level of Investment in Rural WASH in Africa: What are promising financing models, both for building and sustaining WASH services in rural areas?
2. Private Sector Involvement in Rural WASH Financing: What are the constraints, Prospects and Solutions to strengthen private sector participation in Rural WASH Financing?
3. Methods and tools for monitoring financial flows and national accounts of WASH investments in rural areas - How to ensure traceability and accountability of resources mobilised for the Rural WASH sector?

Thank you very much to those participating in the e-discussion on Prioritization of Rural WASH including Sustainability and Quality of WASH services in Africa, convened by AfDB-RWSSI, RWSN and development partners.
 
As we move on this Road to Dakar’s 9th World Water Forum as well as the UN Special Rapporteur’s 2022 thematic report, we have received great contributions regarding week 1’s topic: “means and tools” for rural WASH sector prioritization. Many provided insights and stressed the importance of political will, and the need to embrace simple and decentralised technologies and solutions.
 
Now we are moving to the 2nd week of our discussions (11 to 17 November). During this week, we would like to look at Key factors and actions that improve the sustainability and quality of Rural WASH services. The issues and questions we want to address are:

1. Main constraints and gaps to political prioritization of sustainability and quality of Rural WASH services
2. Enabling environment and requirements to ensure the sustainability, systems strengthening and quality of Rural WASH services – Approaches and solutions that improve sustainability and quality of Rural WASH services
3. Sustainability and Gender: Women play a major role in collecting and saving water for domestic use (IWRM Principle 3): How can empowering women to help increase sustainability and quality of rural WASH services? Please provide concrete examples.

As a reminder, this e-discussion will take place for 3 weeks, from 4 to 24 November 2021, in English and French, and we encourage you to actively participate in it. You can do so by joining the RWSN e-discussion dgroup . The topics addressed in the 3 weeks are:

• Week 1 - Means Means & Tools for Rural WASH sector prioritization in Africa
• Week 2 - Key factors and actions that improve the sustainability and quality of Rural WASH services

The webinar had a great attendance of over 470 registered participants and 150 on the live session. The presentations and recording of the webinar are now available:

Furthermore, we would like to encourage you to continue the discussion by joining the RWSN e-discussion platform . The first e-discussion is from 4 to 24 November 2021, and is focused on the topic: Prioritization of Rural WASH including Sustainability and Quality of Rural WASH services. We will discuss the following aspects in the 3 weeks: 
 
·       Week 1 - Means & Tools for Rural WASH sector prioritization in Africa
·       Week 2 - Key factors and actions that improve the sustainability and quality of Rural WASH services
·       Week 3 - Contribution of Rural WASH to Socio-economic Development in rural areas
 
For the 1^st week (4 to 10 November), we would like to look at Means & Tools for Rural WASH sector prioritization in Africa. The guiding questions are:
 

1. Key dimensions of Rural WASH prioritization – To what extend Rural WASH is prioritized through Development Plans and Programming, Policies and Legal/Regulatory Frameworks, Government Budgets and Expenditure? What is needed and how to strengthen political prioritization of Rural WASH?
2. Integration of concepts of “universal access”, “leaving no one behind”, “human right to water and sanitation” into national development policies, strategies and plans: What are the key drivers to ensure integration?
3. The COVID-19 pandemic could be an opportunity to prioritize Rural WASH: Why has this not happened? At the strategic and operational levels, what are the approaches and means to raise the profile of the importance of WASH sector in rural areas in light with the pandemic?

Dear all,
Apologies for cross-posting.
The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI) under the Water Coordination and Partnership Division, within the African Development Bank’s Water Development and Sanitation Department in collaboration with the Rural Water Supply Network (RWSN) and development partners plan to convene e-discussions on prioritizing rural WASH in Socio-economic Development in Africa. This is part of the joint quest by the Bank, RWSN and development partners to create a platform for preparation and contribution to the 9th World Water Forum (9WWF) scheduled for March 2022 in Dakar, Senegal.

The main purpose of e-discussion is to provide a forum for a wide range of participants for discussions on issues pertaining to the two broad topics as direct contribution to the 9WWF discussions and outcomes. The discussions will also aim to contribute to the UN Special Rapporteur’s 2022 thematic report on “the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation of people in impoverished rural areas”.
