Research (IISER) Pune, is happy to announce their third public lecture.
 
Speaker:  Dr. Jadgish Krishnaswamy, Senior Fellow, ATREE Bengaluru
 
Topic:  Ecological dimensions of India’s water security

Abstract:  There is inadequate awareness and appreciation of the ecological dimensions of India’s water security and this has led to policies
and actions that diminish synergistic linkages between healthy ecosystems and
our water security from head-waters in the mountains to the estuaries, deltas
and coastal where rivers meet the seas. Using evidence from direct
measurements, modelling and theory we explore what we know about linked
ecological and water security in India. This has several components: one is the
role that well-functioning terrestrial, riparian and aquatic ecosystems play in
our water cycle and how these are vital for ecosystem services and for us to
cope with climate change. The second is the recently emerging evidence on the
role that forests and other natural vegetation in India play in the Monsoon
dynamics at large spatial scales. The third is how the ecological restoration
of diverse degraded ecosystems needs to replace high-density tree plantations
as a strategy to make India’s ambitious targets on land-based climate
mitigation less demanding on local hydrological services. Finally, we show how
policies and priorities that are leading to a transformation of our water cycle
need to be revisited and some opportunities for immediate responses are outlined.
 
About the Speaker:  Dr. Krishnaswamy is a Senior Fellow at the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment, ATREE, Bengaluru. He has a B.Tech in
Civil Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, India and an MS
in Statistics and Decision Sciences, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies, Duke
University, North Carolina, USA. His research and teaching interests include
ecohydrology, landscape ecology, conservation planning, ecosystem services, and
applications of Bayesian approaches in understanding complex changes in the
environment over space and time. He has coordinated the establishment of
instrumented catchments in the Western Ghats and in the Himalayas to study the
effects of land cover and climate variability on hydrological processes.
Jagdish has recently become involved in defining and assessing ecological flow
requirements of rivers in the Western Ghats and the Ganga basins focusing
especially on endangered species such as the gharial and river dolphin. He is a
Coordinating Lead Author of the Special IPCC Report on climate change,
desertification, degradation, sustainable land management, food security, and
greenhouse gas fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems.

The  Centre for Water Research (CWR) is an interdisciplinary initiative at IISER Pune that aims to generate knowledge about water systems,
train the next generation of scholars to look at water from an integrated and
multi-dimensional lens, and provide a platform for IISER Pune to engage in
