Re: Course in Systematic Behaviour Change in Development Projects
I am really glad that you have used the forum to advertise your course. I have heard many good things about this course so I can highly recommend it to anyone who has a chance to go to Eawag in Switzerland in March.
As only few people can travel there, though, have you thought about running an online course as well? Or maybe at least filming the presentations?
When I still worked at GIZ, Hans-Joachim Mosler came to visit us based on an initiative by Martina Winkler. We really enjoyed learning from him about evidence-based behaviour change. Not shooting with a shot gun and hoping that something will work but taking one very targeted shot - after researching which method will work for behaviour change!
We have uploaded the presentations and papers of Hansi Mosler on this topic here in the SuSanA library:
www.susana.org/library?search=mosler
Secondly, two of his presentations that he gave in front of GIZ staff in 2012 at a meeting in Uganda have also been filmed and made available here:
susana.org/lang-en/videos-and-photos/res...peitem&type=3&id=129
See video 1: Evidence-based behaviour change protocol: why, how and with which results
Video 2: What can the evidence-based behaviour change concept do for us to reach the goals of the BMZ check-list?
We talk a lot about behaviour change these days. But do we understand what motivates people to behave in this way or another? Do we know which drivers or barriers play a role in their behavioural choices? Do we have any evidence to know which interventions really lead to sustained behaviour change and why? An international expert in the field of environmental psychology, Hans-Joachim Mosler (professor at the University of Zürich as well as senior researcher and group leader at EAWAG), explains his "evidence-based behaviour change concept" and shows how this approach can be helpful for our work regarding the fulfilment of the BMZ check-list's goals on health and hygiene. Long-term health impacts from sanitation systems or from hygiene education are only achieved if people apply the right behaviours and use the systems in the right way.
It is not filmed with highly professional camera people but it is certainly much much better than nothing. Thanks to Martina and whoever alse was involved for making these videos of his presentations. (Camera & Cutting: Lawrence Musoke, Kampala, Uganda)
Kind regards,
Elisabeth

Do remember that qualitative assesment methods also exist to use in the pre-pilot phase including systematic observations, interviews etc.
Relying solely on surveys can produce skewed data if not conducted really cleverly (I have seen many really bad WASH surveys, so I hope your course participants will learn to do a really good one).
All the best with the course,
