Training opportunity in Berlin: SSWM training - water and sanitation projects that last (seecon GmbH)

7 to 9 December 2015

Description

Worldwide, water resources are under increasing pressure: Population growth, urbanisation and a steep increase in water consumption for domestic uses, agriculture and industry have significantly heightened global water use. Climate change aggravates the problem further. This development leads to water scarcity. Conflicts worldwide and the unsustainable management of water resources seriously undermine progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SSWM trainings aim to support skilled professionals in tackling Sustainable Sanitation and Water Management (SSWM) issues at the local level and in implementing innovative and adequate solutions. The SSWM trainings follow a participatory cross-institutional and interdisciplinary approach that puts great emphasis on participants’ interaction (group work, case studies, role plays). In this way, the creativity of participants is leveraged and holistic thinking encouraged.

Aims

During SSWM trainings, participants learn…

…to develop a thorough theoretical and practical understanding of Sustainable Sanitation and Water Management
...how Sustainable Sanitation, Integrated Water Resource Management and Agriculture are inherently liked
…to analyse the water and sanitation challenges in your own area, considering technological, socio-cultural, institutional, health & hygiene and environmental aspects
…about different software and hardware planning- and process
...about implementation tools and approaches geared to tackle the specific challenges in a socially, economically and ecologically viable way.

Participants are provided with the basics to initiate or implement SSWM projects at the local level. They are enabled to join national or international institutions in need for local SSWM experts and to raise awareness with different target groups (from policy makers to students) on the need for sustainable solutions and the range of available options.

Target Group

The training is designed primarily for persons who wish to learn more about sustainable concepts in water management and sanitation, and who are in positions where they can practically use their skills. The training is suited particularly – but not exclusively – for people working in or in cooperation with developing countries:

- Staff members of WASH NGOs or other practitioners in the WASH sector
- Members of local or regional decision making bodies (governments) or policy makers (water/sewerage boards)
- Planners, engineers, architects etc. who are dealing with water and sanitation issues in their daily work
- Students/ university graduates who wish to complement their knowledge with a focus on practical applications
