Re: 6 May 2014 deadline for: Bill & Melinda Gates 'Grand Challenges' Grant Opportunities

I think the first item (Grand Challenges Explorations of BMGF) is in this funding round not applicable to our sanitation topic (I thought perhaps hygiene and hand-washing might be part of it, but looking at the topic description in more detail, I don't think so (?)).

By the way, I noticed that the bullet point list of topics on their website is slightly different compared to the e-mail that was reproduced above, where the bullet point on "novel enabling tools..." has had the words "for Severe Diarrhea" removed and now reads (on the website):
  • Novel Enabling Tools and Models Supporting Development of Interventions for Enteric Dysfunction
It's a pity that "our" topic was only prominent in Round 6 and 7 (2010 and 2011), see here:
www.grandchallenges.org/Explorations/Pages/AllTopics.aspx

where it was called:
"Create the next generation of sanitation technologies"

The results of many of these grants are available here on the forum:
forum.susana.org/forum/categories/96-inn...ience-and-technology

A good proportion of them, about one third (my guess), have recieved follow-up funding and are still active right now.
Some of them have been featured in the SuSanA-SEI webinars, see Youtube Playlist here:
www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0gMdVBup...ymOPomtqL_XYT5YtLTSK

About the Grand Challenges Canada grants, I don't know much about them.
They were mentioned as a (co-)funding partner on the forum here:
forum.susana.org/forum/categories/67-san...emergency-sanitation
and here:
www.forum.susana.org/forum/categories/34...oilets-in-haiti#5681
and here:
forum.susana.org/forum/categories/98-res...nd-2-iwmi-ghana#6647

So it looks like a reasonable place to apply for, for sanitation grants - perhaps also for this round? (hmmm, only 4 days to go until deadline of 10 March, that's tight!)

Regards,
Elisabeth
