Working Group 6 members: Take part in our Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon 19-21 March !

WG 6 Cities plans to update a number of Wikipedia pages referring to urban sanitation.

Wikipedia has great value to those working on the periphery of the sector. For example local government actors working on policy and legislation or media need information on WASH issues. International UN days such as World Water Day are other occasions when the number of people looking to Wikipedia to gain an understanding of WASH related issues will peak.

The objectives of our Edit-a-thon are to:
  • Edit WASH-related pages on Wikipedia (with 500 million users a month it is the world’s 5th most visited website! :woohoo: ). This includes pages that are not specifically about WASH topics but that should provide links to WASH topics, such as the page about malnutrition.
  • Improve quality and quantity of information available on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.
  • Enable SuSanA members and WGs to share their knowledge, which can leverage progress towards the achievement of SDG6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

JOIN: An online event for 48 hours on the 19th-20th March when SuSanA members and others will edit WASH-related Wikipedia pages.

FIRST TASK: We decide together which Wikipedia pages we would like to edit!

Best, Christoph & Prit

> Research focus: the validation of multi-stakeholder planning and programming approaches and the development of planning tools for urban infrastructure in unserved areas. My specific research interests are urban strategic sanitation planning, servicing unplanned urban and peri-urban areas, and multi-stakeholder planning and programming.

Re: Working Group 6 (WG 6) members: Take part in our Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon 19/20 March !

Thanks Christoph and Prit!

SuSanA's Wikipedia World Water Day Editathon (19th/20th March) is being organised under the Gates Foundation Phase 3 Grant.

As 1 of the partners in this grant, WaterAid will be supporting the WG6 to get involved in the Edit-a-thon.

I will start by proposing some Wikipedia pages which WG6 members may be interested in editing.

Here are some suggestions:

Fecal Sludge Management
Urbanization
Urban planning
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
Technical aspects of urban planning
Failures of water supply and sanitation systems
Integrated urban water management
Sustainable development goals (with a focus on adding content under SDG6 and SDG11)
Waste management

What does the group think about focusing on these pages? Have you got ideas of more useful/relevant ones? Please enter your views here in this thread :)

The Edit-a-thon runs from 19th-20th March, and you can get involved from wherever you are in the world, for whatever amount of time you can spare! Soon, I'll be sharing some short videos which explain how you can make basic edits on Wikipedia pages.

Looking forward to hearing the thoughts/questions and comments from WG6!

Hi Ruth,
Thanks for the suggestions.
Since this is WG 6, I think that the edits related to the SDGs should also target SDG 11 - "Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable".

Daniel

Re: Working Group 6 (WG 6) members: Take part in our Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon 19/20 March !

Hi Chris and Daniel,

Thank you both for your responses :)

Chris, in terms of the advantages of the Edit-a-thon rather than us all working individually on the sanitation-related Wikipedia pages..

- The overall impact is greater! - If the quality of all the sanitation-related pages is increased by 20th March, when people look for sanitation information, they will find something useful on Wikipedia, and are more likely to see it as a good source of info on sanitation in future!

- Synergies are created when we work together - "team work divides the task and multiplies the success"

- Increased motivation! We might not normally prioritise the editing of Wikipedia pages, so having the event provides a window when hopefully several people can make it a priority, and enjoy working together on it at the same time

- Visibility - the Edit-a-thon event raises awareness that Wikipedia is a good place to get good quality information about sanitation out to a much broader range of sanitation stakeholders than we are able to reach through the SuSanA website and forum

On the issue of the picture you tried to upload, Elisabeth is going to give you some advice on that.

Daniel, that's a really good point that we should also focus on SDG11! I will make that edit to the list.

Thanks,
Ruth

I suggest that we can add the development of standards for sanitation systems or products.

Re: Working Group 6 (WG 6) members: Take part in our Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon 19/20 March !

Dear Gerald,
What do you mean? Are you referring to an existing Wikipedia article? Or to a new one? If it's a new one what should its title be?
Remember that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia for the general public.

Elisabeth

Re: Working Group 6 (WG 6) members: Take part in our Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon 19/20 March !

Thank you Mwesige and Roumiana for indicating your interest to participate!

Roumiana, it would be wonderful if you are willing to start a page on 'Decentralized wastewater systems'. As a rule of thumb, new articles should have at least 250 words and 3 references (ideally more!). Is this something you feel is manageable?

Also, if there are others in the group who would be willing to help in drafting this new page, please let us know :)

To the whole group: Have you edited Wikipedia before? If not, may I suggest that you head to this thread - forum.susana.org/component/kunena/213-wo...ur-wikipedia-account

If you scroll down the thread, you will see a couple of videos. The 2 from myself and Elisabeth are to show beginners how to get started!

More information to follow shortly! :)
