SFD WEEK
CSE is organising the SFD Week as first knowledge conclave to learn from the experiences and help cities move beyond merely constructing toilets to becoming ODF, thus ensuring city-wide sanitation. The event is being actively supported by Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA), International Water Association (IWA) and National Faecal Sludge and Septage Management Alliance (NFSSM Alliance).
This event is part of CSE initiative on knowledge support and capacity building partner to the - Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, State / target town/cities across India for mainstreaming FSSM for achieving citywide sanitation and river health - including identification the best suited technology and other related aspects such as knowledge sharing on enforcement of FSSM policies/ guidelines/regulation , behavior change etc. aimed to push for convergence of programmes namely Swachh Bharat Mission, AMRUT and Namami Gange at city level - and support cities journey beyond ODF.
One of CSE's key areas of intervention has been Faecal Sludge and Septage Management (FSSM) to deal with the daunting challenge of on-site sanitation. The programme has been involved in preparing City Sanitation Plans as lead global south / Indian partner of GIZ led global consortia and creating ‘Shit Flow Diagrams’, or SFDs. CSE has made contributions to the national policy on Faecal Sludge and Septage Management, which was launched by the Union Ministry of Urban Development in Feb. 2017. This included dedicated budgets for FSSM across 500 + cities in India and AMRUT sub mission on FSSM for water bodies / Ganga river rejuvenation. SFDs have attracted worldwide interest – from Bangladesh, Ghana, Tanzania and South Africa.
