Re: Improving Wikipedia article on "Environmental enteropathy"
Dear Sophie,
Yes, please do that, that would be very useful. You could see how it was done here for the Wikipedia article on waste stabilisation ponds:
forum.susana.org/discussions-about-speci...-stabilization-ponds
Marcos basically told us which sentences and sections in the existing Wikipedia article needed changing and we (Diane and I) then made the changes. At the end, when he felt more confident, he did the last few edits himself directly in the Wikipedia article.
You might feel like putting in your changes directly into the Wikipedia article yourself? That would by great. If you do, make sure you don't do everything in one go but bit by bit, perhaps over the course of a week. This gives other people who are watching the Wikipedia article, like previous editors, a chance to react and to follow your progress, rather than be overwhelmed by a huge amount of changes in one go.
Tables are a little tricky to insert into the Wikipedia article; it can be done. Your table 1 would require references for each row or though, rather than just some references in the caption.
Is Figure 1 an open access figure? If not we cannot use it. Same applies to the image that you propose. Is it open access or is it your own? Both would work. If it's someone else's we would have to get permission that it's open access. Some additional images that are specific to EE would be useful, e.g. any microscopic ones? If you see any in open access articles, they could be used (= the beauty of open access publishing).
I am not sure what the underlining in your Word document means? Is that wiki links to other Wikipedia articles (that would be good)? Note that we do not keep linking each time a term appears but only at the beginning of the article, i.e. when it first appears.
Thanks for your help!
Regards,
Elisabeth
P.S. Mughal: just to clarify: this thread is not about writing a new stand alone document about EE. It is about improving the existing Wikipedia article on this topic. Wikipedia is one place where people go to look up information. Therefore, this exercise is about ensuring what they find in Wikipedia is good, accurate and easy to understand. There is already a Wikipedia article about EE so the idea is to improve it. And if there are good publications about EE, they should be cited in the appropriate places of the article. Let's see when we have incorporated Sophie's new text and new references whether any of those publications that you have listed are still missing and still need to be cited. Thanks.

Re: Improving Wikipedia article on "Environmental enteropathy"
Hi,
Clearly I got very enthusiastic about re-writing!!
I didn't track changes, I just merged what I would add into the existing article which I pasted into Word.
I can happily go back over and highlight changes I made or things I added, add comments on why etc.
Not proposing you use my entire article, as I said, happy for you to just take sections.
Sophie
Thanks FH Mugal, the Keusch paper is very good.

Thank you. I also enjoyed this link: www.defeatdd.org/sites/default/files/nod...TH_6-20-16-Final.pdf
It presents the information in a very crystal clear and simplified manner. This constitute a fantastic resource, if someone wants to know the "basics" of EE.

Dear Elisabeth,
Sophie has produced a very useful document. If I'm not mistaken, she produced the document at your request.
Is there any other way of accommodating the Sophie's document? For example, the current wikipedia write-up has the caption EE; Sophie's document has the heading EED. The first line of the wikipedia article says:
Environmental enteropathy (EE) (also known as tropical enteropathy or environmental enteric dysfunction)
You can put star on EED above, which can then lead to Sophie's document. This is just what came to my mind - you know better; think of some way out - adjust Sophie's document, please.

F H Mughal

Re: Improving Wikipedia article on "Environmental enteropathy"
Dear Sophie,
Thanks for this. Just a clarification question: did you start the Word document by taking the current Wikipedia article? Do you have a version that shows it with "tracked changes" on, so I can see which parts have been added or modified by you, and which parts were already there?
I can't really paste the entire Word document over the existing Wikipedia article but would normally add new sentences or paragraphs or modify existing ones. The previous authors would find it baffling if their entire work got overriden in one go (although it can be done in extreme cases, e.g. if the existing article is really very bad).
For the benefit of others, we are talking about this article here:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_enteropathy
Another small thing is that there is a Wikipedia convention to put references always at the end of the sentence, after the fullstop rather than within the sentence. If the reference only applies to the first part of the sentence for example then a solution might be to break the sentence up into two. Shorter sentences are also better for readability.
Regards,
Elisabeth

Re: Improving Wikipedia article on "Environmental enteropathy"
Hello everyone,
Please find attached my draft for the Wikipedia article on EED.
As I mentioned to Elisabeth in an email, I'm quite happy for some parts and not others (or none at all!) to be used, or whatever would be most useful.
Hope it is of some use. Please do let me know if I can help further.
Many thanks,
Sophie

Re: Improving Wikipedia article on "Environmental enteropathy"
Sophie, I'm glad you're taking on this article. I've been stumped about how to improve readability. It looks like it could use some clarifications and simplifying of concepts, without sacrificing accuracy. Looking forward to seeing your work on this one.

Re: Improving Wikipedia article on "Environmental enteropathy"
Hi Elisabeth!
I apologise for neglecting to look at this so far... it is now on my to-do list for today and this week.
I will send over a word document when I have given it some work!
Best wishes,
Sophie
