Opinion: COVID-19 a collective failure, an unprecedented opportunity

Dear SuSaNa colleagues,

Here is an Opinion piece that was jointly written by Catarina de Albuquerque, CEO Sanitation and Water for All and Sue Coates, the executive director ad interim of the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council which is hosted by the United Nations Office for Project Services in Geneva and advocates for improved sanitation and hygiene for the most vulnerable and marginalized people around the world.

The Op-ed published on Opinion: COVID-19 a collective failure, an unprecedented opportunity presents a strong case on why the authors are convinced that COVID-19 is not just a result of a collective failure but also an unprecedented opportunity for consistent financing that would allow Governments to "put in place not only the infrastructure to provide access to WASH services, but also — and most importantly — the systems, policies, plans, institutions, budgets, and knowledge to ensure the sustainability of services and infrastructures during and outside times of emergency such as this one."

Catarina de Albuquerque and Sue Coates emphasise; "support for the global hygiene crisis must be sustained even after the COVID19 pandemic."

"Financing sanitation and hygiene is key to preventing another public health crisis," the co-authors add.

We would really appreciate if you can read this article, 👉  https://www.wsscc.org/2020/03/30/opinion-covid-19-a-collective-failure-an-unprecedented-opportunity/ and share your thoughts!

Thank you so much!

Re: Opinion: COVID-19 a collective failure, an unprecedented opportunity

COVID-19 virus pandemic is a lesson that has uplift  WASH and not to be neglected. Hand-washing is key and remedy to controlling and preventing infectious disease. It is also a lesson to National governments especially to institutionalised and provide access to WASH services and put systems, policies, plans, budgets in place. Private partnerships and participation should be encouraged to  ensure sustainability of WASH services and infrastructures during and outside times of emergency at all times. WASH is  health and living healthy means  increase in productivity and Nations economy enhances.
