Take it away: the need for designing fecal sludge disposal services for single-pit latrines

We have published a paper titled " Take it away: the need for designing fecal sludge disposal services for single-pit latrines" in the Journal of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene for Development where we report on current sludge disposal behaviors from single-pit latrines in Bangladesh. The results indicate an urgent need to design an organized service that safely transports fecal sludge away for treatment.

Abstract: The government of Bangladesh is increasingly paying attention to the safe collection and disposal of fecal sludge from pit latrines in rural areas. In this paper, we report on current sludge disposal practices from single-pit latrines, by conducting a survey of 1,091 households with pit latrines in a rural subdistrict of Bangladesh. Almost all households were using their pits, and 90% reported that hiring pit emptiers to empty the pit for reuse was the dominant pit management practice. However, 90% of households also reported that the sludge from these pits would be disposed of in the vicinity of their homes, by digging wide and shallow troughs in the soil to absorb the sludge. These results indicate an urgent need to design an organized service that safely transports fecal sludge away for treatment. The National Committee for Fecal Sludge Management, constituted by the government of
Bangladesh, is using these results to design policy for sludge management.

Re: Take it away: the need for designing fecal sludge disposal services for single-pit latrines

Hi there,

Can you please post it here or send it to the secretariat to upload to the SuSanA library for others to benefit from. I would also be interested in this as there is lots of work going on around sustainable pit emptying for the Rohingya refugee response in Cox Bazar.

Thanks
Esther

Re: Take it away: the need for designing fecal sludge disposal services for single-pit latrines

Hi Esther,
That would be ideal, but sadly, the authors are not allowed to do so. That's because it's not an open access paper. With an open access paper, the authors would pay, and the readers can view the pdf file for free (and use and adapt the material, too, whilst still providing proper citation). This paper is behind a paywall which means it's the other way around: The author does not pay a fee but the reader has to pay to get the pdf file (or the reader gets it e-mailed by the author).

Slowly but surely we see more open access papers coming out which I think is the better model (if it's BMGF funded then they usually pay the fees for the "author-pays model" as part of their open access policy).

Another option is for the author to attach the paper to a forum post temporarily. In that case only logged-in SuSanA members can access it which might satisfy the copyright criteria although it's a grey zone which is why I said "temporarily", e.g. for a week or two.

Elisabeth
