Re: Stop weaponising water

Since 'Water for peace and prosperity' is the theme of this World Water Day, sharing a piece  which indicates the important role international organisations can play in facilitating trust building and reaching agreements on the sharing of transboundary waters. This is the case of Indus water treaty between India and Pakistan agreed upon in 1960 has persisted even when the two nations went to wars in later years.

It would be great to hear of similar other experiences of arbitration at various scales.

Stop weaponising water

Dear All,
I am sharing this letter by Prof. Lyla Mehta and Alan Nicol that voices concerns many of the sector professionals likely share. It highlights that stopping water supplies is against humanitarian laws and constitutes a war crime. It also urges Western governments to focus on peace through diplomacy rather than military response.

Please also consider signing this petition by Water Integrity Network, which calls
  • for immediate cessation of weaponisation of water in conflicts,
  • All nations to uphold the Geneva Principles at all times
  • for the UN to develop a process to monitor such actions and penalisation.
Regards
