Here's the link to a short presentation about this compendium from the last SuSanA meeting in August, called "Sanitation in Emergencies - Online Market Place":

Dear FH Mughal,
sorry for the late response. Just saw your question only now:
Reference and URL below:
Global WASH Cluster (2011): Disaster Risk Reduction and Water Sanitation and Hygiene. Global WASH Cluster. New York. URL: water.care2share.wikispaces.net/file/vie...duction+and+WASH.pdf
...and there is indeed a water compendium for the development context coming up. It is currently being developed by Eawag and should be in its final stages now.
Best regards
rob

Dear Mr. Robert,
Thanks for your useful insights on the Compendium. In addition to individuals, I'm sure the Compendium would be very useful to aid agencies, working in disaster-areas.
The definition of "disasters" is interesting. I repeat here:
The Global WASH Cluster describes disasters as events where important losses and damage are inflicted upon communities and individuals, possibly including loss of life and livelihood assets, leaving the affected communities unable to function normally without outside assistance.
I could not, however, find the reference. I looked at the references, which are, by themselves, very useful. Can you send me link to that publication, which gives the definition?
Is there a similar compendium on water?
Regards,
F H Mughal

Dear F H Mughal,
while the existing "Compendium of sanitation systems and technologies" is more related to the development context, the "Compendium of Sanitation Technologies in Emergencies" is focussing on sanitation technologies that are particularly appropriate for emergency contexts from the acute phase over the transition to the stabilisation phase. However, there is a certain overlap of technologies as some of the technologies are appropriate both for development and the emergency contexts.
It is also an attempt to introduce and mainstream the sanitation system approach (considering the entire sanitation service chain from the user interface, via, collection transport, treatment to the safe disposal or reuse) also to the humanitarian WASH community.
...and the individual 2-page technology descriptions include a few more criteria like costs, materials needed, social considerations among others.
Furthermore the Emergency Sanitation Compendium has a dedicated cross-cutting issues section that covers a wide range of other relevant topics such as inclusive design, market-based programming, exit-strategy and handing over of infrastructure, urban contexts, child-excreta management, soil and groundwater assessment etc.
Hope this helps and best regards

Dear Ms. Jona,
This is a very useful and interesting publication. It would be highly useful in emergencies.
Could you kindly highlight, in what way it is different from its original companion volume - Compendium of Sanitation Technologies.
Regards,
F H Mughal

Just released: The Compendium of Sanitation Technologies in Emergencies
Dear SuSanA community,
On behalf my colleague Robert Gensch, I am hereby sharing with you the long-awaited "Compendium of Sanitation Technologies in Emergencies":
It is available either as a free pdf-version (www.washnet.de/en/publications/) or as a hardcopy version (please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
Together with the Global WASH Cluster partners and under the leadership of German WASH Network, Eawag and the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance with support of the German Federal Foreign Office and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the creation of this publication has been an outstanding collaborative effort with contributions from a multitude of different humanitarian WASH sector experts and organisations.
The compendium provides a structured and user-friendly manual and planning guide for sanitation solutions in emergency settings. It supports and enables decision making by providing the necessary framework for developing a sanitation system design. It compiles a wide range of tried and tested technologies in a single document and gives concise information on key decision criteria for each technology, facilitating the combination of technologies to come up with full sanitation system solutions, all linked to relevant cross-cutting issues.
In a next step, the Global WASH Cluster together with the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance will host the online version of the Compendium.
We are grateful to all partners and donors, who have made this possible through their past and continuous support.
Enjoy reading…
