Do let us know the feedback on the flash cards when you use them.. We are now in the process of using these for preparing a fecal sludge management plan for a city in India. These flash cards definitely need extension to show other technology options. As a first phase, we developed these to include options that are predominantly found in Gujarat, India..

@ marijin.. we understand that the twin pit system has been promoted specifically to address the challenge of emptying of the pits. One pit when filled has to be left unused while the second pit is in operation. CPHEEO manual also mentions that within a period of 1.5 years, the fecal matter turns into "pit humus" that can be safely and manually removed. Hope this answers your query.

I have one question related to the "The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers (and their rehabilitation) Act, 2013".

On some of your flash cards it states that this law "prohibits manual cleaning and
emptying of pit toilets and septic tanks"

While at other cards the Twin-pit toilet is promoted as a good technology for the future (which I agree with, providing water source protection measures are in place). How does the manual scavengers act regard the manual emptying of twin pit latrine pits in your interpretation?

Following is a link to the Flash cards developed by the Urban Management Centre and CEPT University’s Performance Assessment System (PAS) project , which classify different on-site sanitation available, encompassing all four aspects in the value chain: Collection/storage, conveyance, semi-centralized treatment and disposal/use.

The flash cards can be used as visual aids in the field to identify and evaluate existing systems and processes. These cards can also be used as tools to foster discussion with municipal council officers on septage/ fecal sludge management in their cities.

There are a set of 20 flash cards which cover collection, conveyance, treatment and disposal options for outputs from a pour flush user interface. These cards are color-coded as follows based on the level of acceptability and conformation to safe sanitation practices in India which may be applicable in other countries also.

Red colour : Systems and processes that are prohibited by law
Orange colour : Systems and practices that are unsafe and need to be improved/ phased out
Green colour : Acceptable and safe systems and practices
