Register for Residential Training Program on "Reuse of Treated Water- Preparation of State and City Level Action Plans" from 23-25 July,2025

With 16 per cent of the world’s population and a mere 4 per cent of its freshwater resources, India’s water worries are not going away anytime soon – unless the country takes recourse to innovative, sustainable and practical solutions, such as reusing treated wastewater, especially for addressing non-potable water needs. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), only 28 per cent of the sewage generated in the country (amounting to a humungous 20,236 million litre every day) is being treated: this points to the immense potential for reuse, which can significantly reduce our dependence on groundwater.

The Union Ministry of Jal Shakti has already laid out a national framework for ‘Safe Reuse of Treated Water’, mandating cities to recycle and reuse across multiple points within the urban fabric. However, with only some states having formulated policies and action plans to align with this framework, there exists an opportunity to address the gap and offer support to states and cities for building robust reuse systems.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) invites applications for its advanced training programme which is aimed at instructing state and local authorities on how to prepare action plans for reuse of treated water. This training will draw from CSE’s two recent publications on the subject: Planning for Reuse of Treated Wastewater at the State Level and City-level Template on Safe Reuse of Treated Water.

WHAT DOES THE TRAINING PROGRAMME OFFER?
  • Holistic understanding of reuse of treated water in urban sustainability and climate resilience.
  • In-depth insights into regulatory frameworks, national policies, and compliance mechanisms.
  • Sector-specific reuse planning for agriculture, industry, landscaping, and construction.
  • Technical inputs on water quality standards, treatment efficiency, and monitoring protocols.
  • How to prepare state level and city level reuse of treated water action plans
  • Best practices and case studies from India and a broad.
