Re: Sustainability for behaviour change - introduction, invitation and questions

Joli papier.

Nice paper. My congratulations on the relevance of the writings dear colleague. In addition to the lessons, it is necessary to highlight these projects of access to water (in collaboration with the municipalities) which seems to be decisive for access to hygiene whatever the context. As one of our members said to, "You can teach people forever the right way to wash their hands, but if they don't have access to sufficient soap or water, people are forced to live without hand hygiene. Re: Sustainability for behaviour change - introduction, invitation and questions

Thank you for your interesting post, with which I agree completely.

You mention that the hand wash manufacturing companies should help promote good hand hygiene instead of scaring people. I am such a "hand wash manufacturer" even though not in the sense I think you meant it.

Real Relief (the company I represent) has developed the Supertowel, which is a product that can be used for hand washing when access to soap and water is limited, you can read more about the product on ELHRA's web site at www.elrha.org/project/supertowel/ . We developed Supertowel because hand washing in many cases, especially emergencies, is a great challenge. You can teach people forever about the right way to wash hands, but if they do not have access to soap or water in adequate quantities, people are forced to live with lacking hand hygiene.

Together with LSHTM we have published two scientific papers about our work on Supertowel. They are both open access and can be downloaded here:

Best regards

Re: Sustainability for behaviour change - introduction, invitation and questions

Awareness creation on the negative health impacts of poor hygiene practices on the population is good but not very effective at producing the desired behavior change because knowledge alone may not necessarily translate into practice in most cases.

It is best if we "sell" the message and understand people's preferences, motivations and environmental challenges that hamper their ability to practice improved hygiene, including hand washing.

Sustainability for behaviour change - introduction, invitation and questions

The hand washing and use of sanitation can be enhanced by creating the knowledge about health benefits and seriousness of illness spreads due to improper hand wash to household members. There is a survey that for every 23 seconds, a child dies from either pneumonia or diarrhoea worldwide. Creating awareness among the children will help in developing the sustainable behavioral practice. Countries like Kenya deploy the student volunteers from universities to create knowledge to improve health and well-being in their home communities due to hygiene and sanitation. Latrine and hand wash facilities should been constructed in all household to enhance the hand washing practices. Knowledge about the health benefits of hand washing is widespread. However, the displaying of hand wash procedure in washing area will help in improving the procedure. The hand wash manufacturing companies should advertise the importance and correct method of washing the hands instead scaring the users by saying the infections and pathogens, which can been eradicated by using their products.
