At our primary school in Mshomoroni, Mombasa (Kenya), we operate an innovative sanitation system combining urine-diverting flush toilets, vermifiltration, a small constructed wetland and recycled flush water. The system is designed to function off-grid using only solar power and rainwater.

Although the concept works in principle, it does not yet perform reliably in everyday use. We are therefore looking for an expert or researcher who is interested in:

• Reviewing the system on site or remotely
• Identifying optimisation potential in operation, maintenance or design
• Possibly conducting a study or thesis project
• Supporting us in improving long-term stability and performance

System components include: urine-diverting toilets (urine → banana plants), worm-based solid treatment, sand-reed wetland filtration and reuse of treated effluent for toilet flushing. Handwashing is supplied via rainwater and low-flow fittings.

If you have experience with vermifilters, decentralised wastewater treatment, constructed wetlands or similar systems and are interested in supporting or studying this project, we would be glad to hear from you.
