Re: Simulant feces (human faeces mimics) - Does anyone have a good synthetic/artificial recipe of human faeces?

Here is a plot comparing some rheology data for both fecal and simulant materials. The human feces data is from Woolley et al. preliminary results that is on a separate link on this site. We’ve also included some comparative curves from other published papers. I’ll comment to this post with the full references.

Hi all,
Find attached some data obtained from biogas potentials of simulant feces and simulant feces+urine. The results suggest that the urine and feces mimics used here could be suitable surrogate for anaerobic digestion experiments.

Re: Does anyone have a good synthetic/artificial recipe of human faeces? - And information on rheological data such as viscosity
Hi All,
The Foundation has identified a standard test media that may be of interest to you for the RTT Fair. The test media is composed of 35.5% water, 33.8% soybean, 18.5% rice, and 12.2% salt, and has a density of 1.15 ± 0.10 g/mL. This simulant is used by all toilet manufacturers that undergo MaP testing (see more information here: www.map-testing.com/ ). Please let me know if you are interested in using this media to demonstrate your technology. If we have enough interest, we will order the test media in bulk and have it shipped directly to the Foundation.
Thank you,
Rosalyn

We have worked with a similar simulant for our pyrolyzer and have found some limitations on the rheology if live yeast is used. We have frozen the yeast and gotten better results with that approach to prevent the simulant to “rise” with the live yeast.

Small Jell-O balls may also be used since they generally have neutral buoyancy. We may try to use small plastic beads to demonstrate mixing, but thought placing organic material in the reactor could make for troublesome clean-up after the Fair.

Re: Simulant Feces
We can use this simulant for our exhibit or we can bring our own (miso paste in a condom) which as also been used in the industry.

Re: Simulant Feces
Hi All,
I just want to point out that this mix may be very good as a mimic for rheological properties, but in our case, we are concerned with the how the feces and urine behave during anaerobic digestion and result in biogas production. We have successfully tested a slightly more complex mix, see “Biogas potential of human feces mimics” posted on May 10, 2012. You can click on the link “GB Test 1” for a report with the composition and biogas potential results. Please share your results or comments.

What is the total moisture content of this simulant?
What is the caloric content of this simulant?
What is the quantitative rheology of this simulant?
What is the form of the soybean and other organic ingredients? Are they dehydrated?

Re: Simulant Feces
Hi Brian,
I forwarded your questions to our contact at MaP testing, but have not heard a response. I will update you when I get additional information.
Regards,
Rosalyn

For us this formula works. We want to have some to test our prototypes.

Re: Simulant Feces
Thanks all for your comments. Our team at BMGF is working to determine if there is enough interest from fair participants to purchase this product. Stay posted as there will be more information to come.

Hey Gary,
Not sure if you have posted the references for this anywhere, but could you post the reference for the Woolley Paper for human stool from the graph you posted.
Thanks
