💡 Guwahati’s Shit Flow Diagram (SFD Lite) Report is Now Published
The SFD Lite Report for Guwahati (developed under the aegis of UNICEF Assam) and published by SuSanA (Sustainable Sanitation Alliance) offers the city’s first evidence-based snapshot of how faecal waste is managed across the sanitation chain.

🚨 Key Findings from Guwahati’s Sanitation Profile:
• 91% of faecal waste is unsafely managed at some point in the sanitation service chain.
• 24% is not safely contained at the household level due to poorly designed septic tanks.
• 17% never reach any treatment site, directly entering open drains or the environment.
• 45% of liquid effluent gets discharged untreated into the Bharalu, Basistha, and the Brahmaputra River systems.
• Only 9% of excreta is safely managed end-to-end.

🌊 Possible Implications for Guwahati’s Future:
Unsafe sanitation is no longer just an environmental issue – it is a water security, public health, and climate resilience challenge, impacting:
• Drinking water sources
• Groundwater quality
• Wetlands like Deepor Beel
• Urban flooding and drainage capacity
