Urban trend

Meeting the urban basic services is a big challenge in the rapid urbanization trends in Pakistan. The census report in 2017 indicates that there is a total increase of 57% in the population in the last nineteen years and urban population increased from 32.52% in 1998 to 36.38% in 2017. Sindh is the most urbanized province with 52.02% people living in urban human settlements, among the four provinces i.e. Punjab, Sindh, Baluchistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. (Census Highlights , 2017)

Mandate for Water and Sanitation

The Ministry of Climate Change (MoCC) takes the leadership for drinking water and sanitation at federal level and is responsible for policy formulation, standards settings, reporting and coordination for regional and international commitments. The prime responsibility for service provision related to drinking water and sanitation services lies with elected local councils and respective local government departments in each province. After the introduction of 18th amendment of the constitution, passed by the National Assembly on April 08, 2010, WASH is delegated the provinces. The federal and provincial governments are responsible for policies’ formulation and the provincial departments play a vital role in improved service delivery through project identification resource allocations, and O&M of WASH facilities.
