Re: Sub-consultation on WASH within the global thematic consultation on water
Participants will include Member States at the highest possible level, Observers, UN Agencies and representatives of civil society, private sector, and other relevant stakeholders.
Three key issues that will be addressed include:
1) What are the main challenges we are facing in the water, sanitation and energy sectors hampering the achievement of the MDGs and how can these challenges be tackled in an integrated manner in a post 2015 development agenda with the overarching goal of poverty eradication, including through goals and targets?
2) What concrete means of implementation (e.g finance infrastructure, human capacity, institutional reforms etc.) must governments, their international partners and other stakeholders undertake to ensure implementation?
3) How can ecosystem approaches, science and technology know‐how, conservation measures and sustainable use be successfully utilized to increase action at all levels on water, sanitation and sustainable energy?

You may be having a point there but my colleague in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, Ms Befrina Igulu remarked in the editorial of the Sept-Oct 2012 edition of the ‘Africa Water, Sanitation & Hygiene ’ that the terms water, sanitation & hygiene are inseparable in health, concluding that they are synonymous ‘because sanitation is the hygienic way of promoting health towards water usage for cleanliness’ hence the regime of the term WASH in Global Thematic Consultation on Water.
Could it be that both of you could be talking the same thing in different setting?
Thanking you
Mwaniki

Re: Sub-consultation on WASH within the global thematic consultation on water
I've read the thematic consultation and felt that even until today 2013, they are still calling Sanitation as Water.
By intertwining Sanitation into Water, the effect of Sanitation is lost inside this maze of discourse.
My response is that Sanitation should be a separate Agenda in order that dedicated members of the community can focus on its solutions and progress.
This is what the UN needs to do as a great step forward to solve the sanitation crisis.
You can't solve it by calling it Water for All. You need also another heading "Sanitation for All".
It's like saying "All Men are Brothers". And claiming that women are included in this discussion.
Quite ridiculous, wouldn't you think so?
Thanks
Jack Sim
Kind regards,

Sub-consultation on WASH within the global thematic consultation on water
The web-based Global Thematic Consultation on Water is happening. A sub-consultation in relation to the formulation of the proposed targets related to Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) is also taking place.
The specific aims of this sub-consultation which will take place over the next 5 weeks are to:
1) Stimulate a wide range of global discussions with citizens, governments, civil society, academia, private sector, UN agencies among others on wastewater management and water quality related priority issues that need to be reflected in the future post-2015 goals and targets.
2) Analyse and share experiences from the present MDGs including those on water and sanitation and bring out evidence on progress and drawbacks from their implementation as well as evidence to support the necessary inclusion of wastewater management in the future development agenda.
3) Examine policy options and responses for wastewater management at local, national and international level and how these options might be deployed to inform the post-2015 agenda.
4) Suggest practical approaches to the formulation of objectives, measures, and monitoring processes for inclusion in future goals
Over the course of 5 weeks (14 January to 17 February), the Stream on Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) will lay out weekly related topics with key questions that we would like you, the viewer, to comment, discuss and debate about in this open platform. This stream will provide a contribution to the Thematic Consultation on Water with recommendations on how to address WASH related challenges in the post-2015 development agenda. We look forward to your contributions! The Sub-Consultation will take place through discussions on five specific themes
The sub-consultation will take place around the following topics:
Week 1: Aspirational Objectives of the Joint Monitoring Program (14-21 Jan.)
Week 2 : WASH in Schools (21-28 Jan.)
Week 3 : WASH, and Governance: People, Power and Politics (28 Jan. – 4 Feb.)
Week 4 : Consultation on WASH and Environmental Sustainability (4-11 Feb.)
Week 5 : WASH and Economic Development (11-17 Feb.)
The importance of this the consultation is that it will help to set the development agenda for the next 15 years and more, therefore the most valuable contributions will be those that are relevant to the formulation of the proposed targets and indicators.
The SuSanA community is encouraged to discuss contributions and participation here on the SuSanA forum and then where possible make collective submissions either in small groups or through the SuSanA working group structure.
Sign up, contribute to the discussion and have your voice heard at:
