Toilets of the Caribbean: small-scale solutions for better water and sanitation in the Caribbean
The GIZ global programme Sanitation for Millions has been improving sanitation and hygiene in Jordan, Uganda and Pakistan since 2017. This year, the programme proudly introduces a new component thanks to a technical cooperation agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Safe and clean toilets for all and safely managed wastewater are now planned and implemented in Latin America and the Caribbean. This new component is known by the acronym “CReW+”, An Integrated Approach to Water and WastewaterManagement Using Innovative Solutions and Promoting Financing Mechanisms in the Wider Caribbean Region, which aims to achieve SDG 6.2 and 6.3 through innovative small-scale solutions that can be upscaled and replicated, and will combine direct construction and rehabilitation measures at the local level with institutional, regulatory and legislative reforms; sustainable and tailor-made financing options; and knowledge managementand advocacy.
Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), implemented by the IDB and UN-Environment Programme (UNEP) with GIZ and the Cartagena Convention Secretariat as executing agencies, altogether the project will be implemented in 18 countries: Barbados, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago, 12 of which will be executed by Sanitation for Millions.
CReW+ is the follow-up project of the first CReW, which was carried out by IDB and UNEP with the support of the Cartagena Convention Secretariat in the same region from 2011 to 2017.

Inodoros del Caribe: soluciones a pequeña escala para mejorar el agua y elsaneamiento en el Caribe
Sanitation for Millions, programa global de la GIZ, ha estado mejorando el saneamiento y la higiene en Jordania, Uganda y Pakistán desde 2017. Este año, el programa introduce con orgullo un nuevo componente de proyecto, gracias a un acuerdo de cooperación técnica de cofinanciación con el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID). Se están planificando y ejecutando ahora inodoros seguros y limpios para todos y aguas residuales tratadas con seguridad en Latino América y el Caribe. Este nuevo componente se conoce por el acrónimo "CReW+", An Integrated Approach to Water and Wastewater Management Using Innovative Solutions and Promoting Financing Mechanisms in the Wider Caribbean Region, que tiene por objeto alcanzar los SDG 6.2 y 6.3 a través de soluciones innovadoras a pequeña escala que puedan ampliarse y reproducirse, y combinará medidas directas de construcción y rehabilitación a nivel local con reformas institucionales, regulatorias y legislativas ; opciones de financiación sostenibles y adaptadas a las necesidades de los usuarios; y gestión y promoción de los conocimientos.
Financiado por el Fondo para el Medio Ambiente Mundial (FMAM), implementado por el BID y el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (PNUMA) con la GIZ y la Secretaría del Convenio de Cartagena como organismos de ejecución, en conjunto el proyecto se ejecutará en 18 países: Barbados, Belice, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Granada, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, México, Panamá, República Dominicana, Saint Kitts y Nevis, Santa Lucía, San Vicente y las Granadinas, Surinam y Trinidad y Tobago, de los cuales 12 serán ejecutados por Sanitation for Millions.
CReW+ es el proyecto de seguimiento del primer CReW, que fue llevado a cabo por el BID y PNUMA con apoyo de la Secretaría del Conveniode Cartagena en la misma región de 2011 a 2017.
