WSUP Topic Brief: Financial analysis for sanitation planning: lessons from Dhaka
Plans for sanitation improvements often stall at an early stage due to the challenge of costing different sanitation options, leaving low-income communities without improved sanitation.
To address this need, WSUP, IWA and local partners have developed a financial tool which helps planners get a preliminary understanding of the affordability of different sanitation improvement strategies.
This Topic Brief describes the development of the prototype tool, how it works, its practical application in two wards of Dhaka and the results it produced. Ways in which the tool could be improved are noted, and the Topic Brief ends with a discussion of the tool’s potential wider applications.

Re: Improving financial analysis in sanitation planning - lessons from Dhaka
looks very interesting i can say. the usual challenge undoubtedly is confirmed here too, "no unit cost data". it is good that this is building on something similar to WASHCost ideals.

Improving financial analysis in sanitation planning - lessons from Dhaka
Dear all,
Attached is a presentation entitled "Improving financial analysis in sanitation planning - lessons from Dhaka" that I gave recently at the IWA conference in Nagpur on Decentralised Wastewater Management in Asia – Meeting Urban Sanitation Challenges at Scale (iwadewats-nagpur.com).
I would encourage other members of the Working Group on Finance and Economics to be more proactive in sharing relevant documents/information and submitting postings to the group to stimulate more interaction and discussion about key issues relating financial costs and economics of sanitation systems.
best regards,
Jonathan
