Dear WASH sector colleagues,

The Institute for Sustainable Futures – University of Technology Sydney is pleased to deliver to you three new pieces of research related to WASH Enterprises. This research has been undertaken under the Enterprise in WASH initiative, funded by the Australian Government – Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

These outputs will be useful to civil society organisations, governments, enterprises and donors looking for ways to understand and better support and enable equitable and sustainable WASH enterprises.

The new outputs include the following:

· Women in WASH Enterprises – Learning from female entrepreneurship in Cambodia, Indonesia and Lao PDR (Working paper 6)
· Business development services for sanitation enterprises in Cambodia (Research Report 8 and summary)
· A brief review of the literature on business development services with some case studies (Working paper 5)

These three pieces of research are elaborated upon below, and the links to each of them are within the titles of the document. Feel free to send these on to any interested colleagues. Also, stay tuned for further work stemming from these reports, including empirical research on women in water enterprises in Cambodia and Indonesia, and research on district-level associations of community-based organisations in rural water supply Indonesia. Women in WASH Enterprises – Learning from female entrepreneurship in Cambodia, Indonesia and Lao PDR (Working Paper 6)

The purpose of this working paper is to document learning about female entrepreneurship in other sectors beyond water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in order to better understand recent efforts to increase women’s involvement in WASH-related enterprises. The Working Paper draws on literature available on female entrepreneurship in Cambodia, Indonesia and Lao PDR, and identifies the need for further empirical research building on this literature review.

How might sanitation enterprise support be provided at scale? This research report and summary report presents findings of research on the current status and possible models and principles for providing business development services sector-wide in Cambodia.

Business development services for enterprises: A rapid review of global literature (Working Paper 5)

This document presents the results of a rapid desktop review of global literature on support services offered to business across a range of sectors. Drawing from academic (peer-reviewed) and ‘grey’ literature (such as reports from non-government organisations (NGOs), international agencies etc.), we explored key dimensions of business development services for enterprises. We have also provided examples of such models used across a range of sectors (WASH-related, and others) in a range of settings (both developing and developed country contexts).
