We are getting a better editor for the forum soon: "What you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG) and other bug fixes

Dear members,

In a week or two you will see the forum with new functionalities and probably a different (unfinished) look & feel. The reason is that we are upgrading to the latest version of Kunena (Kunena is the open source forum software that we use). The funding for the IT upgrading work (carried out by Dotwerkstatt) has been made possible through the project funded by WSSCC and run via Skat Foundation (thank you to both those organisations!). The biggest change will be that the new version will allow editing in the so-called “what you see is what you get” mode (WYSIWYG). A lot of users have asked about that in the past. The editing will be like writing a document in Word, whereas currently it’s like writing with a HTML editor. More explanation about WYSIWYG is here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WYSIWYG

There will also be other improvements and bug fixes which we will discover together once we start using the new version. Please be aware that we will have an interim period where the forum won’t look as pretty and won’t have some of our custom-made functionalities (such as sending e-mails to other users through the internal message function, some of the statistics pages). Please bear with us as we will gradually restore everything.

As part of the upgrade, the forum and member registration will have to be offline for about 12 hours. I will tell you in advance when that will be – possibly end of March.

Regards,
Elisabeth

P.S. We did think about ditching Kunena and using a different forum software, like "Discourse" (see a discussion with Kris here: forum.susana.org/148-your-suggestions-fo...s-discourse-software ). In the end we felt it wasn't worth the extra programming time and decided to stick with Kunena for now. More important than the software is probably the forum moderation which we have recently been able to strengthen by bringing on two more paid co-moderators (also funded by WSSCC) - Paresh and Charlotte.

Re: We are getting a better editor for the forum soon: "What you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG) and other bug fixes

Dear forum users,

tonight (Berlin time) all software components of the forum and the underlying CMS were updated. Some SuSanA-specific adjustments had to be made for the usual use. If problems occur despite our extensive testing, please let us know.

With best regards from Berlin!

Congratulations! This is a major improvement. Am writing this on a mobile phone through Google Chrome. The toolbox for modifying characters eg bold, italics, paragraph attributes, is on the left as a margin.
Seems all to work. Osubscripts may be a challenge to turn on and off and then continue typing

Hi Steffen
Now on  a PC in Chrome. The toolbox ribbon is at the top where it should be.
Still difficult to release the subscript when typing in stream X2 .
But works alright by going back, highlighting the number to be sub- or super-scripted and then clicking on the tool "X2"  or X2"

Otherwise all the other tools work well.

  • Hey Steffen
  • I don't think numbering or bullets is working well (I use MS edge). I only wanted to bullet the text 'bullet 1, bullet 2' , but the entire post gets them.

Thank you for the remarks. There will certainly be improvements needed here and there, and you can help to discover them. You are welcome to report this here and we will try to correct it from time to time.

Best regards

Re: We have a better editor for the forum now: "What you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG) - upgrade to latest version of Kunena

Hello Steffen.
When one copies text from a word file, it needs to be formatted all over again in the editor. Is it possible to copy text with formatting? For long posts, this takes a lot of time.

Thanks
paresh

Re: We have a better editor for the forum now: "What you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG) - upgrade to latest version of Kunena

Hello Paresh,

this is unfortunately not possible, because every program has its own style properties and these are tried to be adopted when copying. However, these are not defined on our website, for example, or only via browser standard properties or they are not even available as properties. This can then lead to a very unattractive appearance. That's why all newer WYSIWYG editors actually have a "Remove format" function. This can be applied to selected text with the rightmost button in the editor's toolbar. It should work in 95% of all cases. But especially text from old MS Word versions are sometimes a bit stubborn, in this case it only helps to copy the text into a plain text editor like the Windows standard editor and then into the forum editor.

I hope it helps. Best regards
Steffen

Re: Test Editor Styles

Hi Steffen,
I don't understand your post. Was it just to try out the different formatting options? Were you able to solve the problem that Paresh had reported: "I don't think numbering or bullets is working well (I use MS edge). I only wanted to bullet the text 'bullet 1, bullet 2' , but the entire post gets them."

By the way for everyone: there is a button at the top right of the editor window which says [BBCODE]. If you click on that you can see the code behind your text. If there is a flaw in your post, this might help you to sort things out, e.g. with attachments or bullet points.

Elisabeth

Re: We are getting a better editor for the forum soon: "What you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG) and other bug fixes

Dear Steffen,

Thank you for the work you have put in to make the editor more user friendly. Initially we had the preview option for someone to review their work before they post, could that still be incorporated? It will really help especially with avoiding posts that are not well formatted if they have been copy pasted from word.

Regards
Charlotte
