Re: Sustainable sanitation and hygiene program in Gombe state Nigeria
Dear Dr Umar:
Latinoamérica also share the Sustainable and Innovative Rural Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene - SIRWASH project in LatinamericaThe overall objective of SIRWASH (Sustainable and Innovative Rural Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene services) is to contribute to closing the gaps in the coverage and quality of rural Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services, so that they can be accessible and sustainable, contributing to building the necessary capacities and fostering an environment for generating long-term changes. The intervention will use a three-pronged approach: 1) policy influence, 2) innovation, and 3) knowledge management with a strong focus on leveraging partnerships. SIRWAS' geographic intervention is planned for rural populations suffering from poor access to WASH services, and to work with governments that have the political will to close the gaps, with a view to "leaving no one behind." The activities will be carried out at a regional level and will focus on four Latin American countries (Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and Haiti).
Just as in India there are important results that the SIRWASH project has been generating, it would be nice to have a South-South exchange of experiences .
Maybe you can share with us a link where we can also see the image?

Re: Sustainable sanitation and hygiene program in Gombe state Nigeria
Dear Dr Umar,
Thank you for informing about this exciting project. Perhaps India's experience in rapidly increasing coverage of toilets and reducing open defecation could be relevant for this programme. While it was not a fool-proof programme, and questions about its sustainability, issue of safety of workers, appropriateness of on-site systems, among others have been asked and continue to be asked. In my opinion, it was very successful because of political sponsorship and incentive subsidies for households to construct toilets. Check out related discussions on the forum Indian Government initiatives: Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA or SBM) and others
You could check out the Wikipedia article on Swachh Bharat Mission (FYI: SuSanA moderators contributed to its writing and editing).
Feel free to reach out if you have questions about the Indian experience. I'd also encourage you to keep us updated about the project's progress so that we can contribute in whatever ways we can, and be a part of it.
Regards
paresh
