Re: Sanitation ecosystem stakeholder map/visualization
Thanks Patrick, much appreciated!
Agreed that the output for this will very much be skewed towards my point of view, and through the lens of my own experiences here in India. The intention of this is to (attempt to) capture the complexity of the sanitation ecosystem in an effort not only to elucidate the manifold players in the sector, but to also succinctly (and visually) convey the need for collaboration between all parties in order to arrive at sustainable solutions to the sanitation crisis.
A lot of this is born out of my experience with Project Sammaan and the frustrations that have arisen in hearing the far-too-simple terms in which our government partners use when discussing sanitation, frequently marginalising the crisis to simply a question of infrastructure (the "if you build it, they will come" fallacy). The hope is to graphically represent all the touch-points that need to be mobilised in order to implement new, successful approaches.
In any event, thanks again for your feedback; it's greatly appreciated. Now I just need to learn some graphic design skills to capture the magic, haha.
Cheers!

Re: Sanitation ecosystem stakeholder map/visualization
Good morning Kevin,
There are loads of really good tools for stakeholder analysis out there on the web. I like the quick overview on the wiki page Elisabeth posted. In addition to what you can read there I would say that there are two aspects that should be borne in mind when carrying out a stakeholder analysis.
The first aspect concerns who is carrying out the analysis. A stakeholder map generally represents a version of how the stakeholders are seen from one particular point of view. If you develop maps of the same process with different stakeholders, it could well be that each map looks quite different. The perception of the mapper can have an important impact on how the different stakeholders are represented (particularly regarding who are the primary, secondary, key or even veto stakeholders). There is no one single truth, just various interpretations of it.
The second aspect is: what is the purpose (and scale) of the analysis? Is it simply to serve as a representation of the stakeholder landscape (which would then not be so detailed), or would the idea be a comprehensive understanding of power differentials, responsibilities, relations and the dynamics of the relations between the stakeholders in order to facilitate the process? The second obviously requires more time and a more intricate methodology.
I generally find it usually useful if a stakeholder map is accompanied by a short explanation of who it was mapped by /with and for what purpose.
This publication here seems quite good: www.fsnnetwork.org/sites/default/files/e...-akteuersanalyse.pdf

Ah Cheers Elisabeth! Very good stuff, and a super quick turnaround to boot! Much appreciated. I'm going to work off of these and create (or attempt to anyways) an India-centric visualisation. I'll add it to SuSanA once it's complete.
Thanks again!
Kevin

Re: Sanitation ecosystem stakeholder map/visualization
Dear Shane,
Ah, interesting question! I will start with providing one example of a stakeholder visualization and I hope others will contribute theirs as well.
This one comes from the MSc thesis of Anselme Vodounhessi whose MSc supervisor I was in 2006. He did an amazing piece of work there, it is 9 years ago but still very up to date:
Figure 5-2: Stakeholder interactions at FS treatment and transfer level in Kumasi, Ghana
www.susana.org/en/resources/library/details/1370
Vodounhessi, A. (2006). Financial and institutional challenges to make faecal sludge management integrated part of ecosan approach in West Africa - Case study of Kumasi, Ghana. MSc Thesis (WM 2006.05), UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Delft, the Netherlands
As I always have Wikipedia on my mind these days, I had a quick look what's there and found this page:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stakeholder_analysis
It seems like a reasonable starting point, and we could enrich the article with examples from the sanitation sector if people post some examples in this thread, which I hope they will.
Kind regards,
Elisabeth

Hey everyone!
I'm looking for a stakeholder map (or any other visualisation really) that captures all the players in the sanitation ecosystem (e.g., funders, implementation organisations, m&e firms, government agencies, advocacy groups, commercial players, csr groups, policy think tanks, technical consultants, etc.). I'm most interested in the Indian context, but am interested in any graphic presentation of this.
I'd appreciate any information on this that you all can provide.
Thanks and keep up the great work everyone!!
