Re: Consultation on SANIHUB's new Brief & Checklist 'Gender equality in sanitation and FSM in emergencies'

Dear Sue,
Thank you for sharing the update. I appreciate that the individual contributors are acknowledged.

I like the image (below) used to depict the different approaches to integrating gender in humanitarian sanitation. The temporal consideration, as evident in the following quote, is not unique to humanitarian sanitation alone, IMHO. It probably also applies to resource-constrained situations. However, it will likely become an excuse rather than a strategy.

gender-sensitive practices are anticipated in the early stages, gender-responsive actions are expected in the mid-term, and gender-transformative programs are envisioned for the long term

I am copying the definitions below to pique interest and elicit engagement with this extremely important work.
  • Insensitive programming is evident in sanitation facilities that lack gender separation and are installed in distant, often isolated and unprotected areas.
  • sensitive programming prioritizes equitable access to sanitation services for girls, boys, women, men, and people with diverse SOGIESC (sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics)
  • Gender-responsive programming can empower women to speak about their sanitation needs and work together to find solutions.
  • Gender transformative approaches recognize men as key players in creating positive change by involving them in efforts to reduce stigma surrounding menstrual health and hygiene, promoting equitable division of domestic WASH responsibilities, and implementing programs
The link shared by Sue earlier has numerous resources to explain more and demonstrate how the approaches worked and where they failed. I can't wait to dig deeper. Thank you again Sue for sharing this.

Dear Sue and the SANIHUB team,
Thank you for sharing the brief and checklist for review. I see that the reviewer form is still open for submission. Could you please confirm whether inputs are still welcome or the time has passed.
In either case, it would be great to hear about the feedback you have received.

Consultation on SANIHUB's new Brief & Checklist 'Gender equality in sanitation and FSM in emergencies'

Hi everyone,

The SANIHUB is developing a new topic brief to strengthen gender equality in sanitation and faecal sludge management (FSM) in emergencies. This topic brief aims to support WASH practitioners with key approaches and practical recommendations for gender integration, along the continuum from gender sensitive, gender responsive to gender transformative aspects of humanitarian sanitation interventions. The brief is accompanied with a gender equality checklist with practical recommendations as well as further information and resources.

Over the next 2 weeks, we'd really like to have some discussion with you all on the draft materials and the topic. You can find the drafts at these links:

Please do not insert any direct comments in the draft documents. If you have feedback please add them to the  reviewer form  or post a message on the platform.  It would be great to hear:
•Any feedback on how we can improve the brief
•How can we make the checklist more concise and user friendly
•Any case studies we can include esp on FSM
•If you have any knowledge resources that can be referenced

More broadly, it would be really good to hear your experience of the topic. For instance, is gender transformative change possible in a humanitarian sanitation context, how have you supported people with diverse SOGIESC around sanitation or what approaches can be useful in rebalancing gender roles in the sanitation and FSM chain?

Anyway, we hope the materials are of interest and we are really looking forward to hearing your comments or feedback

Thanks
Sue Cavill on behalf of the SANIHUB
