Impacts of female genital mutilation (FGM) on menstrual hygiene management (MHM) - and links to sanitation

Hi all,

Given that 28th May will be the first Global Menstrual Hygiene Day , a few of us around the globe have been discussing the impacts of FGM on MHM. Here are some examples/writings we've stumbled across:

Female Genital Mutilation and Menstruation (Period Blog post)

Living with FGM (advice)

FGM and Menstruation (Crimson Movement Blog post)

We'd like to start a discussion- do you have any stories you'd like to share on this topic, or questions we (or more likely, an expert who joins this conversation!) might be able to answer? Both FGM and MHM are taboo subjects, but both impact heavily on the physical and emotional health of women and girls, as well as education, work, etc.

And of course, since FGM is linked to MHM, it is also linked to sanitation. So we'd also welcome discussions around how MHM is/can be taking place in areas where FGM occurs but sanitation is poor.

So let's get talking!
