Reply: SIMPLY STATED: The world thinks diarrhoea can be solved by taking antibiotics. How did we get this s o wrong?
Good news: Arno and I are doing our share to help raise awareness about antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and its connection with lack of sanitation, by editing the Wikipedia article about it now. We started last week and are making really good progress. We've committed to doing at least one hour per day on it, and are meeting in the Adobe Connect virtual work room each day (until World Toilet Day) from 12 noon to 1 pm Central European Time.
This is how the article looks now:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antimicrobial_resistance
Arno is inserting new content and references about the numerous linkages between sanitation, lack of sanitation and AMR.
We are both working on making the content easier to read and less researchy, rather targeting the general public as the audience. I see this article as an overview article from where more specific articles can branch off. More specific articles include for example:
- New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase 1 : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Delhi_metallo-beta-lactamase_1
- Antibiotic misuse : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibiotic_misuse
Did you know that this week is Antibiotic Awareness Week (www.cdc.gov/antibiotic-use/week/index.html)? So it's very timely to get some good information out there about the role that better sanitation could play to reduce antibiotic misuse.
If you want to help us, please put your thoughts on how to improve this Wikipedia article here into this thread, or put it on the talk page of the article here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Antibiotic_misuse
If you want to help with Wikipedia in general, you'll find every you need to know here on our Meetup Page (including the link to the Adobe Connect work room):
