Sustainable sanitation news from the Netherlands: LeAF Letter, no. 17, February 2014

For anyone who is interested in the sustainable sanitation activities that are being carried out in the Netherlands, I can recommend reading the most recent newsletter by the company LeAF (who joined as a SuSanA partner last year, see here: forum.susana.org/forum/categories/87-new...ganisation-of-susana)

For anyone interested in UASBs, the last article by the "grandfather" of UASBs, Gatze Lettinga, is a must-read, I think.

If you have questions about any of the mentioned projects, please write a reply post here and I will alert the responsible person at LeAF to your post, so that they can answer here.

LeAF Course on New Sanitation – The Resource Recovery Approach
In spring this year LeAF will organize a two day course “New Sanitation – The Resource Recovery Approach” (8-9 April 2014). The aim of this course is to inform the audience on how to make concrete steps towards the New Sanitation (also known as Sustainable Sanitation or EcoSanitation) in the built environment.

New Sanitation in Venlo
The former military area "Kazernekwartier" in Venlo will be developed into a multi-purpose area based on Cradle to Cradle (C2C) principles. The functions of the buildings of Kazernekwartier are not yet fixed, but the ideas include large-scale leisure facilities, a Casino Event Center, sports and wellness facilities, hotel, a health care institution and thematic retail. New Sanitation has been selected as part of the measures that can be undertaken to achieve the C2C objectives.

Participatory workshop on comparison of sanitation technologies in Adama, Ethiopia
LeAF and waterboard Hollandse Delta have successfully organized a workshop within the project ROSSA – Resource Oriented Sanitation Services in Adama, and gathered key stakeholders in sanitation for the city of Adama in Ethiopia.

Improved cost-effectiveness manure digestion
The Dutch government and the primary sector (horticulture, arable and livestock sector) have agreed in the ‘Covenant Clean and Sparingly Agro sectors’ to strive for a biogas production of 1.500 million m3 biogas in 2020.

Wet torrefaction of biomass generates usable fuels
Salty and wet biomasses are generally difficult to process as a fuel in incineration or gasification. ECN developed TORWASH, a wet torrefaction treatment that can convert this type of biomass into a usable solid fuel.

Friesland Watervision
In the past year has LeAF together with experts from the Centre for Water Expertise in Leeuwarden (CEW), KRW and VHL, worked for the province of Friesland and the municipality of Leeuwarden on the “Vision Water Technology Friesland 2020”.

New facility: reed bed filters
At the end of 2013 eight plastic containers for reed bed filters (constructed wetlands) have been placed next to the building of the Environmental Technology group of Wageningen UR, where also LeAF is located. Natural treatment systems such as reed beds are already widely applied in practice.

My Anaerobic Sustainability Story – by Gatze Lettinga
In this booklet Emeritus Professor Gatze Lettinga tells his story of the "how, why and what for" of the development and subsequent implementation of UASB and EGSB anaerobic treatment systems, as well as of innovative micro-aerobic and aerobic complementary resource recovery methods at Wageningen University and in the Netherlands as a whole.
