Sewage pollution is an emergency hiding in plain sight. The United Nations estimates that 70-80% of global wastewater enters the environment untreated, generating $4 trillion in annual economic losses worldwide. This toxic pollution also contributes to ocean acidification, microplastic contamination, habitat degradation, fisheries losses, and threatens public health both at the coast and miles inland. The ocean is not a bottomless dump. It’s time for urgent, coordinated action. Our Solution: A Global Action Platform (Step 1 Toward a Global Treaty)
Launched at this year’s UN Ocean Conference
as a first step toward a global sewage treaty, we’re building a coalition to advance an Action Platform with measurable objectives, including:
- Strong monitoring & reporting systems to track sewage pollution at national and transboundary levels.
- Updated regulatory standards addressing microplastics, PFAS, heavy metals, and nutrient runoff.
- Enforcement mechanisms through government-NGO-private sector partnerships.
- International reduction targets for sewage pollution.
- Investment in nature-based solutions and circular water economies.
- Innovative financing for infrastructure and maintenance.
