Re: Case study community participation for Bachelor thesis

Dear Hanna,

Firt of all, good luck for your research. It's certainly a topic that deserves more attention. As Patrick already mentioned, it's not that easy to define the 'participation' and quite often the term is used with different meanings according to who is applying it.
Did I get it right? Are you planning to do a field work?! When you mentioned you are from Bremen, occurred me one of SuSanA's partners, the non-profit organization Borda (www.borda-net.org/). They are based there. Do you know their work? It could be a good a start.
Since you are dealing with human rights to sanitation, I also reccomend you to have a look at the book of Catarina de Albuquerque, there you can find best practices and some more ideas. More specific related to participation in sanitation projects, you can have a look at McConville's PhD thesis and also the work developed by Sandec/Eawag related to HCES and CLUES. All of them you can find in our library.
Are you in a time rush?

All the best,
Cecília.

Re: Case study community participation for Bachelor thesis

Good morning Hanna and the best of luck in tackling this topic!

I'm sorry I can't help directly with a project example. I can think of a few that used participation as a buzz-word in project documentation and presentations but none that have really managed to pull it off.
The problem with term participation for me is that is generally used as a stand-alone phrase. When projects talk of "community participation" the rarely really describe what the mean or how it was established. Real participation is hard to find. A good background read would be "Participation: The new tyranny" (www.amazon.com/Participation-New-Tyranny...-Cooke/dp/1856497941) Oh and this too (just to balance things a bit) - www.developmentinpractice.org/reviews/pa...cipation-development

One project that might be worth looking at though (just occurred to me) might be the work of Sarar Transformacion in Tepoztlan, Mexico (TepozEco) - check here for a start: www.sarar-t.org/publicaciones/E3-05%20GT...%20sheet%20draft.pdf

Good luck,
Patrick

Re: Community Participation in Sanitation Projects

Hello,
my name is Hanna and I already posted a question a couple of weeks ago. As some of you weren’t sure what I am looking for I wanted to ask a second time and explain my request a bit more in detail. At the moment I am writing my Bachelor thesis that has the title “Community Participation in development projects- How far can the participation approach contribute to an effective implementation of the human right on water and sanitation? As it is “only” a thesis for my bachelor the paper has about 50 pages in total, so I only can give a quick insight to the topic.
As I don’t want a pure theoretical thesis I am looking for a project that I can present and analyze at the end of my thesis as the empirical part of my work. In the chapter before I am giving a general overview about the project identification, planning, implementation and evaluation with the focus on what the most important aspects are in order to reach a high and successful standard of community participation through the whole process and a description on what the problems and limits are in each step of the project cycle. (I am not using a specific methodology as for example PRA, so I am more flexible with the design of the project). I was hoping I could find a sanitation project that has the focus on community participation and rather has finished the evaluation process, so I could see how the practice works with the theory and see if the concept has an impact on the successful outcome, especially in the area of health (Water and sanitation).
I hope that my question is now clearer.
I already checked the SuSanA data base and were in contact with some organizations but I couldn`t find a suitable project so far that I feel also would work for a bachelor thesis and really embedded the concept and idea of having the local population participate.
If you know a project that I could present please send me an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
Unfortunately my work is in German but if necessary I could summarize the important chapters into English.
Thank you very much

Case study community participation for Bachelor thesis

Hello,
my name is Hanna Fuhrmann and I am just about to finish my Bachelors in Political Management in Bremen, Germany. I am currently writing my Bachelor thesis with the topic "Community Participation in development projects- How far can the participation approach contribute to an effective implementation of the human right on water and sanitation?
For this purpose i am looking for a project that fits the criteria of having the concept of community participation as a key area in their project planning and implementation (preferably in Latin America or Africa due to some personal experiences).
In my Bachelor thesis I would like to analyse this projects on the basis of criteria that are essential to an effective implementation of this approach.
If someone knows such a project I am more than happy to explain my topic in more detail and would be really glad if someone could help me finding a proper project for my case study.
(You can answer me in this forum or writing me an email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)
Thank you very much
