  • Sanitation is dignity and life. Through living and working 15 years in (Mozambique) where Cholera is endemic, the importance of sanitation became evident, furthermore it is clear that sanitation is more than an infrastructure

Re: RE: [WG1] WG1 meeting documentation and follow up

Congratulations to the group!!!
I am really impressed by the summary that reveals that there was lot of energy in the meeting .
What an interesting exposé of presentations and great to learn more about ongoing initiatives.
I know when I collected the cap dev initiatives for first sustainable sanitation Cap Dev factsheet 12 years ago. Those initiatives were easily counted on my two hands.
Now look at the change and the power we have to make a change.
I am so sorry I was not able to participate but I had to attend a meeting with my director.
I will follow the development of the factsheet .
Keep it up
Warmest regards to you all!

Re: WG1 meeting documentation and follow up

Dear SuSanA WG 1 members,

Another WG 1 – Capacity Development meeting took place during Stockholm World Water Week on 27th August from 2-4 pm at the Quality Globe Hotel. The meeting started by getting a feeling of who is in the room; out of the 33 participants of the meeting, there were representatives from NGOs, INGOs, Research Institutes, Government, private sector. Also, the type of capacity building showed a wide range - there were technical skills, institutional (planning, financing), organisational development, advocacy, public awareness, business development. Lastly, there was a good balance between “newcomers” to WG meetings and long term SuSanA members.

Please find below:
1. Expectation of meeting participants
2. Links to the intro presentation
3. Link to the 7 presentations by members
4. Outcomes of the session on planning for an updated factsheet of Working Group 1: A first small group is established, in case you are also interested in contributing to the update of the SuSanA Capacity Development Factsheet, please contact the working group leads (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

1. Expectations of the meeting participants
a. Get to know WG1 and how to contribute
b. Learn about/get an overview of CapDev initiatives going on around the world
Learn from various organisations regarding failures in CapDev
Learn from successes in working with the private sector
c. Collaborate with other institutions, look out for synergies
Avoid duplication of existing Knowledge products
d. Share knowledge and activities, showcase examples
e. Discuss topics:
Organisational and Community capacity Development
The global progress on scaling-up the EcoSan toilets
Discuss Financing & Monitoring of Capacity Building
Awareness development
Technology innovation and adoption
Mechanisms of dissemination of existing Capacity building materials

2. Introduction of WG 1 through WG lead Dorothee Spuhler (Eawag-Sandec) (click on links to see the presentations)

3. Flash presentations from Capacity Development Actors
o Eva Manzano (CAWST) Building local knowledge and skill to meet communities needs for water, sanitation and hygiene
o Vasco Schelbert (Eawag-Sandec) Consultant Capacity Development (ConCaD) for City-wide Inclusive Urban Sanitation and other activities of Eawag-Sandec
o Aditi Dwivedi (CEPT University) Capacity building for smart FSSM monitoring systems
o Sandra van Soelen (Simavi) Using the Most Significant Change (MSC) approach to measure the results of capacity development: an example from the WASH and Learn programme
o Depinder Kapur (NIUA) Capacity Building for sanitation : addressing the blind spots
o Reinier Veldman (SMART centre group) Training entrepreneurs in Malawi in SMART sanitation and water technologies
o Damir Brdanovic (IHE Delft) Global Sanitation Graduate School

4. Updating the factsheet of Working Group1: what are our messages and how do we get them through?

a. Presentation of how to contribute and the tentative factsheet structure through WG lead Dorothee Spuhler (Eawag-Sandec)

b. Group discussions:
Who should use this factsheet for what?
o NGO and INGOs, governments at all levels, policy makers, UN organisations, private sector, academia, CD trainers, activists, professionals, SuSanA partners and members in general
o Starting point for CD Overview (Who, what, where..); Reference material when developing CD initiatives & programs; Position CD for sustainable sanitation in the SDG agenda; show importance for CD for sustainable sanitation;
Is a factsheet the right format to reach out our message, any alternatives?
o Wikipedia is easier to adapt and update; Chinese alternative to Wikipedia – Baidu Baike;
o YouTube Video of 5 min summary of final factsheet; should be used as base and link to further information;
o Make more infographics and visuals and less text. 8 pages is too long for a factsheet
What should be removed or added regarding the suggested the structure?
o Integrate information on SDG 6.3.1
o Add background on SuSanA
o Technical and practical skills for masons are missing
o Monitoring tools or indicators
o Overview of technology types, where capacity building is available
o Factsheet should be one page, make logo smaller and summary
Who could contribute to what?
o A first small group is established, in case you are also interested in contributing to the update of the SuSanA Capacity Development Factsheet, please contact the working group leads (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

Special thanks go to Franziska Volk from the SuSanA secretariat at GIZ not only for the good meeting preparation, but also for this great summary!!!

Re: [WG1] WG1 meeting (capacity development) on Tuesday 27. August 2 to 4 pm at the Stockholm World Water Week

Thank you Franziska for digging this out.
I have a few similar lists from past meeting with "hot topics" for the WG. But personally, I would like to focus on the factsheet. Some of these "hot topics" could also be taken up in a paragraph of our new factsheet?
Personally my favorite topic is and has always been:
"how to monitor and evaluate impact of capacity development" which is very much linked to this discussion: forum.susana.org/10-announcements-regard...impact-on-sanitation
Cheers, Dorothee

Re: [WG1] WG1 meeting (capacity development) on Tuesday 27. August 2 to 4 pm at the Stockholm World Water Week

Hi Dorothee and all,

yesterday I stumbled upon a list and priorization from the SuSanA Core Group Meeting in January 2017. In a Brainstorming Exercise Core group members could suggest topics and activities for all 13 WGs and then “vote” for them by putting stickers next to the activities they consider most important. This list could be revisited in drafting the agenda and/or during the meeting.

It can be found for all other WGs here: www.susana.org/files/20170116_meeting-mi...uSanA-Core-Group.pdf

Working Group 1: Capacity Development

Topic (Votes)

How to communicate with and involve the "wastewater" sector on sustainable sanitation? (6)
Building capacities of businesses and entrepreneurs (3)
Vocational training (2)
Identify capacity gaps for different categories of SuSanA members/partners and developing work plans on how to address these (2)
Strengthening civil society, particularly human rights and implications for practice (1)
WASH and Nutrition (1)
Consider different levels of capacity development (from the individual to institutional) (0)

Best regards,
Franziska

Translation by Google Translate:

Thanks for the invitation. I have just registered. I make a presentation. But it would be in French and I would like to know that would be taken into account and even know if the meeting would be exclusively in English.
Good reception in the hope of an answer.
