Re: 20th SuSanA meeting on 22 August - Feedback

Thank you Evelyn and the whole secretariat for all the work behind the scene to make this meeting possible and also to SEI to host us in their beautiful setting.
I really appreciate the efforts that you put into documenting the meeting and making presentations available online for those who could not attend.
I also would like to share some information and outcomes from the working group meeting 1 on capacity development for sustainable sanitation.

Participations:
We were roughly 20 people from all over the world. Represented organisations were among others CAWST, CSE, Cap-NET, R4D, GIZ, seecon/cewas, BORDA, I-san, SEI, Eawag/Sandec, Difaf, and Lund University.

Topics:
We had 9 input presentations contribution covering following topics:
  • Capacity Development in conflict areas (Alex Wolf, BORDA)
  • Mapping of local capacity gaps and matchmaking (Peter Blair, R4D)
  • Internet-based capacity development tools:
  • MOOCs (Philippe Reymond, Eawag/Sandec)
  • Cap-Net´s Virtual Campus (Themba Gumbo)
  • The SSWM Toolbox (Dorothee Spuhler, seecon)
  • The SuSanA Forum
  • Developing local capacity development capacities at post-graduate level (Richard Kimwaga, University of Dar es Salaam, Sara Gabrielsson, Lund University)
  • Capacity development needs for promoting SFDs (Cecilia Rodrigues, GIZ consultant

Discussion:
After the input presentations we had a moment time to further discuss some hot topics:
  1. What are the mayor capacity gaps to meet the post2015 targets?
  2. How can we highlight the crucial role of capacity development for the 2015 agenda? And how can we (WG1) contribute to fill these gaps?
  3. Why is SuSanA WG1 relevant for you? And why are you relevant for the group
Highlights of the discussion:
  • The internet provides a huge opportunity to for reaching out to the mass with relevant knowledge and material. Different tools exists such as MOOCs (online lectures, exercises and final exams on university level, enrolment required for getting the whole package), Virtual Campus (videos and background information) or knowledge sharing and management platforms such as the SSWM Toolbox, or the SuSanA web-platform.
  • However, establishing and maintaining such online resources at a high quality requires careful preparations and consequential human resources.
  • The example of the Eawag MOOC series on WASH in Developing Countries shows, that the resources put into the professional preparation and quality control of online teaching tools has an direct impacted on the user numbers.
  • On the other hand, the SSWM Toolbox or the SuSanA forum also shows that the content can be enriched by promoting collaboration between different organizations in order to put together their knowledge and channel it to a targeted public.
  • However, online capacity development does not replace localized activities and face-to-face training programs and workshops. International collaboration between training institutions are a useful tool to built up local curricula at different levels
  • Long-term partnerships are required in order to establish local curricula and also to built up mutual trust and understanding which is particularly crucial in politically unstable or conflicting areas.
These are some other take home messages:
Capacity gaps:
  • Lack of curricula and staff at local level
  • Need for multi-disciplinary capacities for SDGs and sustainable sanitation
  • Lack of critical mass of human resource at the local level for capacity development
  • Lack of capacities of governments (e.g. for SDG monitoring)
Opportunities, areas to investigate:
  • Sanitation within sustainability context (complexity of SDGs agenda)
  • Customized capacity development: The target group/user should control time spend, depth of information, etc.
  • Integration of MOOC modules into onsite trainings, or how the MOOC modules can be of best support to trainers on the field.
  • Synergetic efforts (e.g. State owned + NGO)
  • Compile key messages from SuSanA learnings (also failures) and bring it into the hands of local practitioners hands (e.g. through factsheets, technical reviews, etc.)
  • Analyzing why SuSanA works and spread the learnings
  • Make SuSanA partner organizations materials more visible and more easy accessible through the SuSanA platform and add feedback buttons in order to give expert opinions on usefulness of documents and tools
  • Make it clear on the SuSanA webpage where to find what (also links to partner pages if relevant, e.g. MOOCs, SSWM Toolbox, Virtual Campus, etc.)
  • Work on overcoming SuSanA language barriers
Some other key messages:
  • SuSanA is a very suitable platform to share experiences in a straightforward way
  • 2030 is very close hence capacity development for sustainable sanitation is urgent and is needed yesterday.

General impression of the meeting:
diverse - well timed - should have deserved more people – more time for discussion needed (-> continue on the SuSanA forum)

Re: Reminder: WG1 (capacity development on Thursday 27 August 13:30-15:30h (prior to the plenary working group exchange)

Dear all

This is a reminder for you to subscribe for the meeting and to provide your inputs to the working group meeting agenda.

In order to know how many participants we can expect please register here and don't forget to tick the box for WG1 meeting (if you are not sure yet, please register anyway).
If you would like to share some of your experiences as part of the agenda, please write an email to me.

The general topic of the meeting is about approaches addressing the lack of trained sanitation professionals to reach the post-2015 agenda.
The idea is to collect our experiences on innovative and effective tools for capacity development at all levels and its relevance to reach the sustainable development goals. Online discussion forums and e-learning are definitively going to be key issues. But also regional knowledge management and sharing nodes to bring those tools more efficiently to where they are needed most urgently are of relevance.
The meeting might feed into a common factsheet on capacity development for sustainable sanitation that we can disseminate through SuSanA and use for influencing policy and raising funds for up-scaling our activities in this field.

Please feed into the discussion even though you will not be physically present in Stockholm! The outcomes of the meeting will be presented and further discussed here and we will also use the forum to work on a future factsheet on this.

Cheers, Dorothee

SuSanA Capacity Development Working Group meeting: Stockholm WWW, Thursday 27 August - feedback

Dear all

It has been a long time we did not have a working group meeting and I am therefore delighted to cordially invite you to the upcoming Working Group 1 meeting during the Stockholm World Water Week.
When: Thursday 27 August 13.30 – 15.30 h, prior to the SuSanA working group exchange meeting (16.00 – 19.00h) (venue to be confirmed – stay up to date: www.susana.org/en/events/susana-meetings...na-meeting-stockholm )

The theme this year is going to be:

SuSanA Capacity Development Strategy: addressing the lack of trained WATSAN professionals!
At AfricaSan a very interesting recent IWA report on the lack of capacity within the WATSAN sector in Africa was presented: www.iwa-network.org/downloads/1422745887...crisis-wash-gaps.pdf. Furthermore the African Water Association called for partnership to support capacity development. So how can we as a platform respond to the demands in a smart way? We need creative and new ideas and partnership with knowledge institutions to address the lack of trained professionals!

Further topics that are part of the discussion:
- Massive Open Online Course: opportunities and challenges
- Regional thematic training courses (Professional training courses, Smart Start-Up programme, ToTs, Mentoring, etc.)
- Online Knowledge Sharing (SSWM Toolbox, SuSanA Wiki, etc): achievements and trends
- Monitoring Capacity Development

Your contribution: The agenda is not yet defined and please feel free to contact me if you are explicitly invited to contact me if you would like to share your experiences/recent activities/challenges or any other topic during the meeting!: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Next steps: In order to further shape the agenda , I would like to invite you to a online meeting on July 24 15.00 pm CET. Please let me know if you can join (email above).

Kind regards and looking forward seeing you soon!
