What is Faecal Sludge Management?

FS management deals with on-site sanitation systems, while wastewater management is concerned with sewered sanitation. FS may be treated in separate treatment works or co-treated with sludges produced in wastewater treatment plants. FSM deals with the process of haulage, treatment and reuse or disposal of faecal sludge and aims to assist urban dwellers and authorities to overcome the challenges of indiscriminate and uncontrolled disposal of faecal sludge into drains, canals and onto open spaces (Eawag/Sandec, 2008).

Why is it important?

Faecal Sludge Managememt of too often insufficiency considered in sanitation systems. That leads, particularly so in low-income urban areas, to serious health and environmental hazards. Worldwide, several hundred thousand tons of faecal matter from either open defaecation or collected from on-site sanitation installations (unsewered family and public toilets, aqua privies and septic tanks) are disposed of into the urban and peri-urban environment daily. The wastes are mostly discharged into lanes, drainage ditches, onto open urban spaces and into inland surface and ground waters, estuaries and the sea, causing serious health impacts, water pollution and eye and nose sores (Strauss and Montangero, 2002).
