Re: LCA Study: Technology choices in scaling up sanitation can significantly affect greenhouse gas emissions and food security in India

Dear Vissumo,

I agree that in a perfect world anything that cannot be eliminated from wastewater should not be used anywhere and thus not end up in wastewater, but we live in a world that is not so perfect. The list to prohibit would include those plastic microbeads, plus most pharmaceuticals and cleaning products.

This is another reason to promote UDDTs, as they help to keep some of these substances out of the rivers.

Another option is have flush toilets, but never release the blackwater into the environment and, instead, clean it up and put it back into the same toilets, in what I call Closed-loop Flushwater Recycling. Remember that no one touches the water in the toilet, much less do they drink it. If we dump it into the river (even after treatment), these substances could wind up in someone's drinking water. We discussed this here:

... and I have described this more in the attached documents.

The question is not clear. Appreciate if you could elaborate on the query so that we can address it.

BR,

  • The WastewaterExchange is matching offers and demands of wastewater by-products to ease the finance of bio-refineries. Part of the margins of the wastewater transformation are allocated to wastewater suppliers answering some quality criteria.

LCA Study: Technology choices in scaling up sanitation can significantly affect greenhouse gas emissions and food security in India

Good day
Products ending in wastewater can be easy or not to treat. When containing microbeabs or pollutants impossible to treat without expensive treatment, those products should simply not be sold. Do you agree with that?
Thank you
