PS: That accords with the cost of the FSTP plant (balancing tank with screens also functioning as a settler, then drying beds both planted and unplanted followed by horozontal wetlands) I visited at Shinyanga in Tanzania in 2021. With a nominal capacity of 40 m3 per day, it had cost 150 000 USD to complete in 2020, inclusive of all costs (i.e. buildings, fencing, site earthworks etc). The plant was operated by two people, neither of them high level. With the whole process being gravity driven, it would have been very robust and cost-effective to operate and maintain.

The costs vary depending on the capacity. Up to 5 cubic metres of FS per day, the treatment modules cost around 10,000 USD per cubic metres. For 5-10 cubic metres , the per cubic metre costs are around 7,500 USD. From 10-15 cubic metres, it costs about 6,600 USD per cubic metre. Beyond 20 KLD, it costs less than 6,000 USD per cubic metre. Depending on area availability, these systems - integrating new innovations like Greenhouse roofs - can be easily deployed for treating up to 50 cubic metres per day.
Please do note however, that these are costs for treatment modules. Additional costs might apply like building fences around the site, having operator rooms, completely roofed sludge storage yards, internal roads, landscaping etc. - as per the site conditions. Poor quality soils also will have an impact on the construction cost.
The advantage lies however in skills required for O&M and the corresponding costs. These gravity-based, consumable-free systems can be run by local communities. The annualized O&M costs over a 15-year lifecycle can be as low as 5,000 USD/annum.

I had suggested to CDD and others making septic tks or anaerobic tanks.
Have grass green cover atop each roofs of the FSTPs
In this way the plant looks green when viewed on plan view from top.
Also more soothing for eyes Etc..

Thanks very much for sharing that. That looks very useful and it is timeous as interest in and the need for this kind of sensible, practical FSTP grows around the world. I visited an FSTP plant in Tanzania last year that was designed along those lines and liked what I saw.
Have you compiled any data on costs of FSTPs built using ASR + DBs? It would be interesting to see the relationship between cost and capacity (m3 FS/day).

If phytoR is done, may be done on float beds
Easy to crop grass as fodder for livestock- ensure compliance.

Resource: Guidance Document on FSTP Designs by CDD India
CDD India has been one of the pioneers in developing designs for Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs) in India. Over the past 8 years, CDD has developed designs for over 50 FSTPs across the country. Additionally, it has also been involved in setting up FSTPs in Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh as well. The facilities are built on CDD’s legacy of Nature-Based Solutions. The designs are based on Anaerobic Stabilization with Unplanted Sludge Drying Bed (ASR + UPDB) or Planted Drying Bed (PDB) and have been developed through a process of intensive applied research, continuous improvement and iteration. They can be built using locally available construction materials, and are easy and inexpensive to operate & maintain and have very low energy consumption.Based on this experience of the past several years, CDD has developed a ‘Guidance Document for Design of FSTPs Based on Drying Bed Technologies’. Sharing this here for the ready reference and critical feedback of fellow sanitation planners, engineers, academia, practitioners and other Interested sector professionals.
