The FSTP at Sinnar in Maharashtra is of 70 KLD capacity, as per the report available and the treatment is anaerobic. Under such condition, it does not appear feasible to say that the solid content is not much and liquid is being used within the site. Septage has around 2% almost stabilised solid and generated liquid from the FSTP is expected to be around 50,000 lit. per day- can't be used daily for the site.
It may be due to intermittently and very low loading rate of FS /septage.

Yes, we agree this is a great idea. Unfortunately this was only a scoping study, and there was not enough capacity to collect this information. I haven't come across any such study but I recently visited a couple of FSTPs in Odisha and have the following information.
In Dhenkanal, the solids are currently being stored. The horticulture department did pick up some treated FS initially to test its use but no results are available as of now. The liquid portion is used for watering landscape on the FSTP site itself.
In Puri, there is no reuse of solids.

In Sinnar in Maharashtra, the solid content is not much. The liquid is being used within the site.

Thanks for the Report on FSTPs. It may help in implementing FSTPs. However, it does not mention Capex and O&M costs of the system and arrangement made by the agency to meet such O&M to ensure sustainability of the system. Further, quality of treated effluent and its reuse/ safe disposal and resource recovery from the system is not mentioned. I am particularly interested with the FSTPs from India. If such information is available , kindly send.

The report from the Scoping Study: Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants in South-Asia and sub-Saharan Africa is now available.


We identified 120+ FSTPs in 13 countries throughout South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa and visited 23 FSTPs in eight countries for assessment.

This report summarizes results of a scoping study of existing faecal sludge treatment plants in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. It was designed to identify current gaps, evaluate the actual operating condition of existing FSTPs in comparison to design assumptions, and to lay the foundation for what next steps should be taken. The Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag) was the project leader, with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). Delvic Sanitation Initiatives (Delvic) in Senegal and the Environmental and Public Health Organization (ENPHO) in Nepal were the project partners for the scoping study.

It comprises two parts:

• An overall analysis of the situation in 13 countries from South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa and a tentative way forward.


• 20 factsheets that summarize important aspects of the FSTPs that were visited during the scoping study. The factsheets are separated into four main parts: background; management scheme; designed versus actual operation and; challenges and way forward.
